Review: Fighting Destiny by Amelia Hutchins

Fighting DestinySynopsis

Have you ever heard of the old Celtic legends of the Fae – beautiful, magical, and deadly creatures that have a love of messing with humans just for kicks and giggles?
Welcome to my world.
What started out as a strange assignment, lead to one of the most gruesome murder mysteries of our times. My friends and I are set and determined to find out who is killing off Fae and Witches alike.
Couple of problems in the way – I hate the Fae and the Prince of the Dark Fae is bound and determined that I work for him. He’s a rude, overbearing egotistical ass with a compulsive need to possess, dominate and control me. Oh – did I mention that he is absolutely sex-on-a-stick gorgeous and he makes me feel things that I never ever wanted to feel for a Fae…every time he touches me or looks at me with those dangerous golden eyes he seems to pull me further in under his spell, despite my better judgment.
My friends and I can’t trust anyone and nothing is as it seems on the surface – not even me.

Amazeballs! This book rocked my world and left me panting for more. I love the Fae and I am a sucker for books about them. I love the different spins that each author takes on the subject of the Light & Dark Fae. But damn. Amelia Hutchins is a literary wonder with Fighting Destiny.  I cannot think of one thing to bitch or whine about in regards to Fighting Destiny. Except, it ended and I want more. Good thing it’s a series and more (as in the next book) is coming sometime in August. (That’s this month! Squeeeee!)

Which means that yes, Fighting Destiny has a cliffhanger ending. And I loathe cliffhangers, but this one honestly wasn’t that hard to handle. There was some closure and we weren’t left in a lurch, like say, in the middle of a scene or dramatic conversation. I promise you, it’s well worth it. And besides, there’s not that much more time to wait for the next installment in the series.

This book has more than the Fae that I love so much. A kick ass heroine, a yummy Alpha male (and he’s a Prince), good friends and supporting characters, drama, angst, a little comedy, and a serial killer that brings in some action and suspense are just some of the things that make this book incredible. Top all of that with the smoking hot sex and the panty melting words of our Dark Prince and you have yourself a winner. Or Fighting Destiny. Same difference.

Spell-binding. Absolutely spell binding, from the moment you open the book, to the end when you’re dying for more. And I am very picky about paranormal books too and don’t read many. But trust me, Amelia Hutchins, knows how to write. I cannot believe this is her debut novel. The plot line is so intricately woven; everything has much a deeper purpose than you initial realize. I started reading this novel not even knowing what the Fae was which should tell you her descriptions and background information isn’t just for the paranormally seasoned. Thank God the sequel is set to release this month! So yes, it’s a cliff hanger, but (like Mandy said!) you aren’t going to want to fling the book, but you sure as fuck will be glad #2 comes out soon.

The Heroine, Synthia, or Syn (Kick ass name right? Especially for a witch) is the definition of a bad ass. Jacked-up past, vacant future, she is a walking contradiction of her own emotions, but not in the annoying cat and mouse way. I mean suddenly being forced to work with her sworn enemy, and then becoming attracted to him, well, I think we would all be a little torn. Believe me; girl has good reasons to hate all things Fae. However, Ryder is a disarming character. Feral, yet calculated. There were moments when I wasn’t sure whether I wanted Syn to fall for him. Hutchins wrote him so perrrrrrfectly. Strong, robust, total fucking alpha, so I understand Syn’s pull toward him. The secondary characters are equally as captivating as well and really aren’t that secondary. I’m not one to spoil books, so all I’ll say is Larissa and Adrian. HOLY SHIT! Mind-blown!

I promise this book won’t disappoint you; it’s deep, romantic, comical, mysterious and at times sort of disgusting. You will experience Syn’s life with her just as she does, and sometimes, I find the love story of a Heroine and herself even more beautiful.
