Everyone makes mistakes in life. Unfortunately, Holly Richards has become an expert at taking the wrong path in life. This time, she may have gone so far that she has alienated the one person who has always been there for her. Will she be able to make the right decision for once in her life?

Tommy Reed’s world shifted the night he found Holly Richards lying in a pool of blood on the ground. For reasons he can’t explain, he feels the need to protect Holly from her own past. In the process, he’s hoping to also teach her that there is more to D/s than releasing pent up emotions.

Life isn’t easy for the former-junkie and the cop. Some of those closest to Tommy are less than thrilled with his devotion to Holly. Those who pressured Holly into her former life are worried she’ll share what she knows. Is there any way for both of them to come away from the situation unscathed?

4 out of 5

I fell for Sloan’s writing and her delicious hero, Dylan Caprese, in Unexpected Angel and I have been salivating over the teasers that I had seen of Unexpected Protector. Tommy Reed is not a domly Dom but the way that he cares for Holly and helps her to believe in herself and her worth makes him truly worthy of Holly’s submission.

Sloan’s work is not the kink fest that one would typically expect to find in a BDSM book, but that is the beauty of the stories that Sloan shares in her books.  The lifestyle is about far more than sex and Sloan presents this in a unique way.  She puts a lot of emphasis on the emotions involved than on the sex. The sexy times are still immensely well written, it’s just that the story side and the emotional side of her characters’ lives are the focus. Tommy and Holly’s relationship is full of events that test both of their emotional sanities, but with the help of their friends in the Isthmus Alliance and the strength of their bond; the couple thrive.  Holly, especially, finds her strength and sets about making her life and the plan for her life better.  Everyone had to deal with their own emotions after the repercussions of Holly’s actions at the end of Unexpected Angel, but it’s the ending of Unexpected Protector that pulled at my heart.  Sloan blindsided me with a cliffhanger that has my heart in my throat.  After thoroughly enjoying the latest installment in the Isthmus Alliance series, I will be pacing the floors and fretting until I have the next tale.

My original rating for Unexpected Protector was going to be 5 stars.  I loved, loved, loved this book the entire time I was reading, ten times more than Unexpected Angel.  Tommy and Holly are two very amazing characters.

Tommy is the perfect description of this book’s title and I found myself wishing men like him existed in real life.  Holly is the epitome of strength and resiliency.  Sloan Johnson has an incredible talent for putting the reader inside the characters’ heads.  This couple’s story was incredible, and I can’t remember the last time I was rooting so hard for fictional characters.  I was completely hooked.  I was so hooked in fact, that when I got to the cliffhanger at the end, I almost threw my kindle across the room.  Well, maybe I wasn’t quite that mad, but I did let out a string of curses.

Ultimately, the cliffhanger is what brought my rating down.  I’m not saying I didn’t like the ending that is leading into the next story, I just felt disappointed about some of the stuff that was left unresolved.  My rating of four stars is due to the fact that as pissed as I was about the cliffhanger, the rest of the book was phenomenal.

excerpt

I nod, my throat constricted by the emotion I’m not used to feeling.
“Good girl,” he whispers in my ear before drawing the lobe into his mouth, sucking and nipping. He continues working his way down my neck, biting my collarbone harder than I’m used to. I jerk in surprise, but not in pain.
“Don’t stop,” I beg him. My mind doesn’t seem to process the fact that he’s on the wrong end of my body to make my core clench tight. I never knew before now that it’s possible to be driven to climax without any direct contact with either my nipples or pussy. I scream his name as my head falls back, eventually allowing my head to come back to rest on his shoulder.
“Such a responsive girl,” he praises me as he holds me close to him.
“What about you?” I ask when my breathing returns to normal.

Holly Excerpt

My body feels pulled toward the ground by lead weights, I can barely move. Even if not for the pressure, everything feels stiff. As I assess my situation, I hear voices around me, arguing. I focus on my breathing, trying to keep it steady so they won’t know I’m awake. If I open my eyes, I’ll have to face him and I’m not ready to do that.

“I’ve already arranged to help her get clean, I don’t see why you think we owe her anything beyond that.” I may not know Dylan well, but it doesn’t take a genius to know he’s pissed off. But at whom?

“Dylan,” a deep male voice warns. I’m trying to figure out why that voice sounds familiar to me. “Do you really mean to tell me you’ve never fucked up?”

“Like this?” He sneers. “No, I’ve never almost gotten myself and someone I claim to care about killed because I was so fucked up I couldn’t think straight.”

The words are completely true, but that doesn’t make them sting any less. While I have no clue what day it is or how long I’ve been asleep, I remember everything that led to me being here. I wish this was one of those times when the movies had it right, that I had no clue what happened to me.

“Dylan, you’re not being fair,” Tasha sobs. Her voice is further away than the men. Knowing she’s in the room causes an internal struggle. I want to see her, to apologize to her, to beg her to forgive me, but I’m not sure I deserve her forgiveness. I’m the one who led her into the arms of her ex-husband in a feeble attempt to save myself.

“Tasha,” Dylan scolds her in a low voice. “You’re the only reason I’m even standing here having this conversation. Don’t push your luck tonight.”

“Dylan, calm down,” the deep voice encourages. There’s no one in my life I can think of who would be sticking up for me this way, so who is he? “Take a look at your woman. Do you see how much this hurts her? How torn she is? Don’t make this even harder on her. Holly hasn’t always been the mess you know her as…”

“And how would you know? You’re the one who told me she was bad news. Now, all of a sudden you’re saying she’s not really a messed up junkie?”

Review: Unexpected Angel by Sloan Johnson

unexpected angelSynopsis

Tasha Skinner finally shed the baggage of a failed marriage. Now, she’s looking forward to a night of margaritas and man-bashing. Tasha’s friends have other plans, including Leather, Lace and liberation.
Dylan Caprese didn’t want to go to Marquee, but he and his friends were on a mission. They took it upon themselves to make sure things didn’t get out of hand when wannabe Doms mixed alcohol with playtime at the monthly Leather and Lace night.
From the moment he set eyes on Tasha, he knew there was something different about her. She wasn’t some bondage babe who thought she knew what it meant to be into BDSM. She was much, much worse; she was innocent and trusting. He can tell she is something precious.
When Tasha’s past threatens to destroy her, Dylan begins to realize that while their paths have never crossed, their lives most definitely have. Will he be able to save her before it’s too late?

Review

Rating 4.5 out of 5

In exchange for a copy of Unexpected Angel, I agreed to write an honest review. Is there any other kind at Raw Books? (The answer to that would be- HELL NO!) So, I received this book and I had it on my list to read. Then, I saw a couple of teasers floating around Facebook and I kept stopping to read them and kept realizing that they were for that book on my list. Well, I don’t like to be teased, especially when I have the real thing in my clutches, so I sat down to read about this delicious piece of man known as Dylan Caprese.

I am in love! Seriously, Dylan is everything a woman could want in a Dom. He’s firm but so gentle and caring. Tasha was truly precious to him. Tasha was also a strong woman who had been abused by her husband for years and had some triggers and hang ups. But that couldn’t stop Dylan from stepping in and protecting “his Precious” (said in my best Gollum voice). Dylan was very patient in introducing Tasha to his lifestyle and along the way he helped her overcome some of said triggers and hang ups.  The whole book was well done. It had a good pace and the characters were all believable and likable.  I would have liked to see more “sexy times” scenes between Tasha and Dylan, but what I did see was smoking hot.

I really enjoyed that both characters were so right for each other and yet Tasha was so resistant to being claimed. And Dylan was a little baffled by his own behavior in regards to Tasha. The author, Sloan Johnson, gives us both points of view and she does it flawlessly. Dylan is all man and thinks like a Dom. He’s used to being in control and obeyed, but he never crosses the line when it comes to Tasha.  Now, Tasha had some growing to do. She needed to find who she was and learn to stand up for herself. She also had to face some harsh truths, but she has the boys men of the Isthmus Alliance at her back.

Dylan’s best friend, Zeke, was a great character and a big support to Tasha. He treated her like a little sister and talked openly with her without breaking any of Dylan’s confidences or overstepping. That’s a hard line to straddle, but he did it and I really hoped the next book would be about him. Sadly, it’s not but it is about sexy cop, Tommy. I got a sneak peek at the next book, Unexpected Protector, and I need more of Tommy. I think I will love him, too. And you can never have too many book boyfriends, can you?
