Review: The Shrinemaiden by Annie Eppa

4.5 out of 5

This was smoking HOT!!!  Seriously, one of the hottest books I’ve ever read.  I don’t often read the fantasy genre, but the synopsis for The Shrinemaiden had me intrigued so I decided to give it a whirl when Ms. Eppa kindly offered a copy to read and review.  I don’t care who you are, or what genre of smut you like to read, if you like smut that is more than just soft porn on paper, this is a must-have in anyone’s collection.  I was so hot and bothered throughout, I almost missed the story itself, but that would have been a shame because it was equally incredible.

The plot was a clever take on Queen Elizabeth’s Court lies and intrigue, and I also got a feel of a Roman Empire style thrown in.  Every single time I thought I had it all figured out, another curveball was thrown, and I found myself sitting up and thinking, ooh, tell me more!  I had a great admiration for Adelai’s character, not only a highly sensual woman, but also one sharp cookie able to hold her own in a world filled with treachery and danger.  Thornton was the definition of a sex on a stick alpha male, but was so much more than just brawn.  Nothing better than an old school military man, mmmm.

I’m dying for the next in the series, The Slavemaiden.  Kinlee and General Falen are introduced here, I loved them, and I think that one is going to be just as hot as this was, but we have to wait until Feb/Mar 2014 (whimper).  It’s already in my TBR, and I will be begging Annie Eppa to let me review.

Adelai has known only one home – that of the Temple of Inne-annah, Goddess of Lust and Love. As a shrinemaiden, she was raised to be a graceful, high-society courtesan catering only to the rich and powerful, for a price.

On the eve of her auction, however, Adelai discovers treachery at play between two of the most powerful kingdoms in the land, and that she had become a pawn in a political game where the stakes are high, and one wrong move will mean war. The choices Adelai will make shall take her from gilded manors and fancy balls to a cruel king’s royal court, where secrets lurk and loyalty is an illusion. In the end, Adelai must use all the skills she’s learned both inside the bedroom and out of it to triumph against the men who want her, the men who would seek to possess her – and to win the man who loves her, against all odds.

The Shrinemaiden is the first of the Maidens trilogy, which takes place in the dark kingdom of Sarcopia, but remains a standalone.

Warning: explicit scenes, dubcon situations, sexy alpha males and some bdsm.

Annie has two great loves in her life – traveling the world, and writing. She panders to both by working as a freelance photojournalist, where she is sent all over the world to write and photograph awesome people and cute animals (and sometimes even the not-so-cute ones). She’s been on four continents, and hopes to add more countries to her ever-growing list. Due to her job, she has made many countries her home – Sweden, China, Brazil, the Philippines, Canada – and shuffles among these whenever she needs to.

Her debut novel, The Shrinemaiden, is an erotic fantasy set in a strange world of intrigue and bedroom politics. It is a standalone book that also manages to be the first in a series, and is due out in late 2013.

Coming Soon!

When her beloved kingdom of Highrolfe falls, spirited Kinlee finds herself a captured slave, sold at auction to General Connor ‘The Wolf’ Falen, the man responsible for her country’s defeat.

Beaten but unbowed, Kinlee has one last card to play: a secret she must keep hidden from her new master, lest it dooms everyone that she holds dear. Though bound and helpless, she has sworn never to surrender to her frightening, intriguingly sensuous owner. But the Wolf has other plans….

Review: Punished Into Submission by Holly Carter

Punished Into Submission cover

1 out of 5

This was a very disappointing read.  First off, the grammatical errors alone were extremely distracting, especially the misuse of the comma.  Add into that the completely wrong words used…well, let’s just say this book needed some serious editing.  I can deal with a few mistakes that are missed in the writing process, you can usually tell when that is the case.

Putting aside these issues, I have a few other issues with this book.  I have to admit, using the seven deadly sins in a BDSM setting was quite clever, and I was intrigued.  Too bad that the author didn’t research what the seven sins are.  Last time I checked, Patience was one of the seven virtues.

Now, I am not naïve enough to believe that excessive drinking is not involved in the BDSM community.  However, I do know that it is frowned upon, not glorified.  I do also know that subspace is not achieved by simply willing it.  Those two things, along with numerous inconsistencies in some of the scenes in this book lead me to believe that there is a chance that this author doesn’t know anything about the BDSM community, which I am okay with.  What I am not okay with, is that it seems that there was no research into the lifestyle done, and that is quite frankly disrespectful to that lifestyle.  I don’t by any means claim to be an expert, but I’m also not out there writing a book about it.

To top it all off, this book has a cliffhanger, but I’m sorry to say that I have no interest in finding out where this story goes next.

2.5 out of 5

I really wanted to enjoy this book. The synopsis had me intrigued and knowing that it was going to be the first in a series had me excited for a new “BDSM club” series. I already have so many favorites from this type that I thought for sure, this would be great. Unfortunately, this book was a mess.  The bones of a great story were there and some of the sexy times were, in fact, sexy.  And the cast of characters had potential, but that is about all it had. There were so many typos, editing errors, misusage of commas or the lack thereof, and names left uncapitalized that I just couldn’t take things very seriously.  And the main character is all over the place.  She wants to leave, she is drawn to him. One minute she hates him and then she is upset because she doesn’t want to be without him.  And they never really had any heart to heart, getting to know each other time together.  Hunter is either away, busy with something else, or fucking her/ fucking with her.

And I am still confused about whether Kat is a victim of sexual slavery or just goes along with whoever claims to have a hold on her.  She goes from one club to another and seems to have no home outside of the clubs or a job for that matter.  It was all just too confusing and I couldn’t get a handle on Kat’s back story to really root for her or not.

I applaud anyone who has the guts to put a book out there, but in order for me to love a book and want to recommend it to others, the book needs to have more than a scattered plot line and unbelievable characters.  And I can overlook minor typos, but to be taken seriously, I expect authors to take the time to have a book edited and proofed by multiple readers before it is released to the masses.

“Growing up with a drug dealer and a whore was never easy. I saw things that a child should never see. I felt things as a teenager that one should never feel and there are things that I heard that one should never hear. I was grateful when Sailor saved my life.”

Kat was determined to get away and become someone else after her tragic childhood. Become someone people would fear. Become invincible. Incredible. Painful. Harmful. Playful. Dangerous……..

When Kat breaks the law in her adopted club, she is sent to trial where the jury demands obedience, training, and a punishment she will never forget. They force her to become a submissive to none other than Hunter Ford, Master of Masters and Mistresses Palace, the most notorious BDSM club in the city.

Hunter is wanted by all and feared by many. He’s dark, dangerous, and sexy as sin. He’s the master. When he is handed a Switch to play with and teach, he thinks life couldn’t get much easier. How wrong he was. His life was about to get explosive.

Hunter has thirty days to make Kat obey him, respect him, want him, and kneel to him. Hunter’s methods are savage, sexy, and mind blowing. The feelings between this Dom and sub are never meant to be anything more than pleasure and pain. But when you mix pleasure, lies, and an earth shattering need there are arousing yet devastating consequences.

Will Hunter let his guard down? Can the Master be mastered? Or, will Kat give up control after her moment of clarity? Can Hunter succeed and punish her into submission?

Lorraine’s Review

Rating 5 out of 5

So, honestly, from the book synopsis, I thought Until November was going to be one to end up in my take it or leave it pile.  I was definitely wrong.  So much so, that about halfway through the book, I went up to a friend of mine and told her she needed to read this.  The characters, plots, and scenes were so vivid, I often felt like I was there and watching people I know.  Aurora Rose Reynolds really delivered.  My only disappointment was that this is her first book, so I didn’t have anything else by her to read after I finished this.

November runs off from New York after a violent attack spooks her.  She decides to move to Tennessee to get to know the father that her royal bitch of a mother told her didn’t want anything to do with her, but in adulthood she had discovered differently.  Enter super yummy alpha male, Asher, who decides instantly he wants her.  The story takes you through the push and pull of their courtship, running parallel to a sinister danger threatening November’s life.

I think one of my favorite aspects was the fact that Asher didn’t just completely steamroll over November in dealing with her problems, as much as you could tell he wanted to.  She’s an independent woman, somewhat gun-shy to let Asher in, understandable as more and more of her past is revealed.  I came to admire November for her strength through adversity.  Asher was incredible, just the right mix of rough and hard on the outside, with a soft side that only his family and his woman get to experience.

One more note worth mentioning: the minor characters.  I felt I knew the minor characters as well as Asher and November, and I feel that this played a major role in my interest and involvement in the story.

This was a total package winner for me.  Not only am I looking forward to the next release by Aurora Rose Reynolds, Until November is going into my read again and again pile.

Mandy’s Review

Rating 4 out of 5

This book could have been great.  It wasn’t bad, not even close, and I don’t usually say this but- I needed more angst and drama. The heroine, November, was a cool chick and had a good head on her shoulders.  A horrible childhood and being attacked send her running from the big city to Tennessee for a clean slate and a chance to get to know her Dad and his family.  She encounters Asher and he is sexy and speaks jerk, as is popular with our Alpha heroes. Events unfold that point to November not being safe and Asher keeps her safe in the only way an Alpha knows how.  He moves her in and makes it clear that what they have will not be casual and if she defies him, he’ll just drag her back.  His family is full of interesting characters that keep things light hearted.  And he is swoon worthy sweet in his infatuation with November.

November and Asher share a beautiful courtship and things are going well; you actually forget about the events that lead to November living with Asher- until ‘it’ happens and then the whole scene was too easily handled for me.  I wanted, no- I needed, a little more. More angst and drama. I love a happily ever after as much as the next girl and Until November delivers an absolutely beautiful love story and happily ever after. Seriously, the epilogue was FANTASTIC! But the main plot device just wasn’t enough for me.

Would I recommend this book? Without a doubt. It was well written and had a great pace.  The dialogue and characters are very realistic and easy to relate to. This book will be a 5 star read for most. And it was, in a lot of ways, a 5 star read for me. I just needed the conflict to be a little more.
