Review: The Shrinemaiden by Annie Eppa

4.5 out of 5

This was smoking HOT!!!  Seriously, one of the hottest books I’ve ever read.  I don’t often read the fantasy genre, but the synopsis for The Shrinemaiden had me intrigued so I decided to give it a whirl when Ms. Eppa kindly offered a copy to read and review.  I don’t care who you are, or what genre of smut you like to read, if you like smut that is more than just soft porn on paper, this is a must-have in anyone’s collection.  I was so hot and bothered throughout, I almost missed the story itself, but that would have been a shame because it was equally incredible.

The plot was a clever take on Queen Elizabeth’s Court lies and intrigue, and I also got a feel of a Roman Empire style thrown in.  Every single time I thought I had it all figured out, another curveball was thrown, and I found myself sitting up and thinking, ooh, tell me more!  I had a great admiration for Adelai’s character, not only a highly sensual woman, but also one sharp cookie able to hold her own in a world filled with treachery and danger.  Thornton was the definition of a sex on a stick alpha male, but was so much more than just brawn.  Nothing better than an old school military man, mmmm.

I’m dying for the next in the series, The Slavemaiden.  Kinlee and General Falen are introduced here, I loved them, and I think that one is going to be just as hot as this was, but we have to wait until Feb/Mar 2014 (whimper).  It’s already in my TBR, and I will be begging Annie Eppa to let me review.

Adelai has known only one home – that of the Temple of Inne-annah, Goddess of Lust and Love. As a shrinemaiden, she was raised to be a graceful, high-society courtesan catering only to the rich and powerful, for a price.

On the eve of her auction, however, Adelai discovers treachery at play between two of the most powerful kingdoms in the land, and that she had become a pawn in a political game where the stakes are high, and one wrong move will mean war. The choices Adelai will make shall take her from gilded manors and fancy balls to a cruel king’s royal court, where secrets lurk and loyalty is an illusion. In the end, Adelai must use all the skills she’s learned both inside the bedroom and out of it to triumph against the men who want her, the men who would seek to possess her – and to win the man who loves her, against all odds.

The Shrinemaiden is the first of the Maidens trilogy, which takes place in the dark kingdom of Sarcopia, but remains a standalone.

Warning: explicit scenes, dubcon situations, sexy alpha males and some bdsm.

Annie has two great loves in her life – traveling the world, and writing. She panders to both by working as a freelance photojournalist, where she is sent all over the world to write and photograph awesome people and cute animals (and sometimes even the not-so-cute ones). She’s been on four continents, and hopes to add more countries to her ever-growing list. Due to her job, she has made many countries her home – Sweden, China, Brazil, the Philippines, Canada – and shuffles among these whenever she needs to.

Her debut novel, The Shrinemaiden, is an erotic fantasy set in a strange world of intrigue and bedroom politics. It is a standalone book that also manages to be the first in a series, and is due out in late 2013.

Coming Soon!

When her beloved kingdom of Highrolfe falls, spirited Kinlee finds herself a captured slave, sold at auction to General Connor ‘The Wolf’ Falen, the man responsible for her country’s defeat.

Beaten but unbowed, Kinlee has one last card to play: a secret she must keep hidden from her new master, lest it dooms everyone that she holds dear. Though bound and helpless, she has sworn never to surrender to her frightening, intriguingly sensuous owner. But the Wolf has other plans….

Release Blitz & Reviews: Give Me Reason & Give Me Hope by Zoey Derrick

Give Me Reason  Give-Me-HOPE_eBookM

The Reason Series by Zoey Derrick is a series of novellas

4 out of 5
You know when you start reading something and you’re not really paying attention, but then all of a sudden you go, “wait, what?” then go back and start paying attention?  That’s what happened to me with Give Me Reason, and I was totally hooked in two sentences.  On the surface, you’d think it was a typical rich man meets beautiful poor girl and wants to rescue her from her pitiful life.  The prologue hints at the possibility of more so I settled in for what was quickly an intriguing read.

Vivienne is the very definition of a woman who needs a helping hand, but she is very proud and resists Mikah’s help every step of the way.  The story unfolds and is entirely from Vivienne’s POV, and it was really sweet to watch her resistance to Mikah crumble slowly.  Danger lurks on the peripheral of the story and I caught myself nail biting as I read.  Right when that danger catches up with Vivienne…yes, you guessed it, a cliffhanger!  Well played Zoey Derrick, well played.

Seriously though, this is one hell of a beginning to what looks to be a very promising series that it looks like I will be watching for release day on every single one of these novellas.

5 out of 5

While I am not one to normally read novellas, when Zoey asked if I wanted to read her new one, Give Me Reason, I couldn’t resist.  Zoey’s book, Finding Love’s Wings, was so beautifully written that I had to see if Give Me Reason was just as beautiful.  And it is. Give Me Reason sucked me in with an intriguing prologue that had my imagination running with possibilities.  And for the next 100 pages or so, I was glued to my Kindle.

Vivienne is a strong heroine who is in a bad spot with an equally sad history, but she’s not stupid or naïve.  She is resilient and determined. And she’s not looking for a hand out from anyone.

But then Mikah Blake walks into the diner where she works and she is inexplicably calmed by him and he is persistent in his need to take care of her.  But not in an overbearing caveman kind of way.  He seems to realize that Vivienne needs help, but she is not going to let him without good reason and reassurances that she’s not just a charity case.

We are left with a cliffhanger ending, much to my displeasure.  I kept tapping the screen in an effort to magically conjure up more from Zoey. Alas, that didn’t work so I had to wait until Give Me Hope released to satisfy my need to know what happens with Mikah and Vivienne.  Is Vivienne going to be okay after the devastating events at the end of Give Me Reason? Will Vivienne accept Mikah and his assistance in her life? Is there an epic love story unfolding? Are there higher powers at work? Will Vivienne get a chance at a happily ever after or will things from her past continue to compromise her chances? I am desperate to find out.

Vivienne Callahan has known only hardship. As if growing up with an alcoholic, drug addicted mother wasn’t traumatic enough, she’s escaped from her physically and verbally abusive boyfriend only to struggle every day to make ends meet as a waitress in a Minneapolis diner.

Along comes Mikah Blake, a handsome stranger who quickly takes an unexpected and persistent interest in her. On the surface, “Mr. Suit” seems to be Vivienne’s opposite: rich, well-fed, successful. As Vivienne will learn, Mikah is more than he seems, and for reasons unknown, he’s determined to be her knight in shining armor. But after having finally found her own two feet after years of abuse,  it’s difficult for her to accept Mikah’s help.

Will her body’s unexpected response to Mikah’s touch be reason enough to overcome her pride and traumatic past and learn to love and trust? Or will her past, refusing to be left behind, come back to claim her?

He’s looking down at me, making me feel small at five feet two inches. He has to be at least six feet tall. Broad shoulders. His suit today is gunmetal grey with blue or black pin striping—I can’t tell which. His shirt is a beautiful lavender color with a darker purple tie.

“How do you know I’m not an addict?” I ask, softly.

He smiles at me, warm, genuine. “Because, you’ve come to return the money I left you last night as a tip.” My jaw falls open.

“How”—I swallow hard—”did you know?”

His smile fades a little. “Because, why else would you come down here?”

I close my mouth and look down at the floor. His ability to read me is really scary.

“Since you haven’t eaten since last night, I’m going to take you to lunch.”

I feel my face flush bright red, both in anger and complete irritation. “That is not why I’m here. I’ve survived for my entire life fending for myself, I don’t need some rich hot shot business mogul buying me food.” I reach into the pocket of my bag and pull the folded up paper from it. I thrust it towards him. He refuses to take it. Tears of frustration trickle down my cheeks. “Damn it Mikah, take it.” I push it at him again and again he refuses. “I’m not a damn charity case. I don’t need your money or your food.”

The bell chimes. We’ve finally reached the skyway. As soon as the doors open, I drop the folded up paper with his money in it and bolt from the elevator, turning left, hoping and praying I can get away.

“Vivienne, stop.” I hear him say behind me. I keep going, walking quickly but not running. Yet. I’m trying hard to not make a scene.

But he doesn’t seem to care about that. He catches me quickly, spins me around. I grab hold of his arm to catch my balance so I don’t go sprawling onto the floor.

***If you haven’t read Give Me Reason, the following may contain spoilers!***
4.5 out of 5

Give Me Hope picks up exactly where Give Me Reason leaves off, except this book is entirely from Mikah’s POV.  There is a prologue in Give Me Reason that hints at possibilities beneath the surface of the story that are not explained until this book.  And, I must say WOW to what was being hinted at.  If you read the synopsis, it tells you outright what I’m talking about, but I’m not going to say it because I walked into it blind, and I thought it was more fun that way.

Normally, I avoid books that take this direction because they often border on ridiculous.  Zoey Derrick does a great job balancing that line, allowing the ability to suspend disbelief and give the reader hope that special things can exist.  I am so far loving this series, and am dying to get my hands on the next installment, Give Me Desire!

5 out of 5

Another great read from Zoey.  I don’t know what to say without spoiling things about the story. And the story is unfolding so nicely. I feel so vested in what happens to Viv and Mikah and the revelations in Give Me Hope have me angry that I have to wait for more of their story. Being impatient and wanting it all and wanting it now is what normally keeps me from reading novellas, but Zoey’s writing is amazing and I’m like an addict needing my next fix when it comes to her work.

Mikah and Vivienne’s story is hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking. They both have big hurts in their pasts and the present isn’t being any nicer to them. The next installment in the Reason series is due out before the end of the year and I am desperate to know where things are headed. HURRY, ZOEY!!!! I NEED MORE!!!!

An Angel is he…

From the first moment he saw her, MIKAH BLAKE was seized by an inexplicable need to protect Vivienne Callahan, a fragile but fiery young woman who’s awakened a slumbering power within him. With his encouragement, Vivienne has begun to turn her life around, and things seem to be heading in the direction of a slow but certain happily-ever-after. But that happy ending is side tracked by a rising evil that is determined to destroy her.

When her dark past comes back to claim her, Mikah is caught in a whirlwind of events that lead him down a path he was born into but never understood. Until now.

Can Mikah save Vivienne?  Will his love be enough? Will he be able to control his angelic powers and use them to protect his newfound love?

Review- Adam’s Apple by Liv Morris

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00071]Synopsis

Adam Kingsley reigns as the young prince of Manhattan. Everything he touches turns to gold making him the envy of Wall Street. Women swoon at his feet, money falls out of his pockets, and his killer good looks are as wicked as sin. A dangerous trifecta.
What more could a thirty-two year old man wish for? Maybe that his life never changes and his past stays far away? Sounds reasonable but life seldom is.
Kathryn Delcour is a beautiful and alluring socialite with unique erotic tastes. When she suddenly appears on the New York City social scene, Adam finds her too tempting to resist. He has to have her, but she is warned to stay away from him and his player ways. She tries her hardest to keep him at arm’s length however Kathryn’s arms may not be strong enough to hold Adam at bay.
Hidden secrets, Kathryn’s passion for an ancient sexual practice, and a former business partner wanting to inflict a deadly revenge set the scene for a wild ride as Adam tells the story in his own words.
**Intended for mature audiences. 18+ An 87,000 word love story.

Mandy’s Review

Rating 4.5 out of 5

Liv Morris can write like a man. No-wait, that didn’t sound right. Liv Morris can write a man. Better, but not nearly enough to express how well written Adam’s Apple truly is. The entire book is told from Adam’s point of view. We never get even a glimpse at the incredibly smart, sexy, and intriguing Kathryn’s point of view. But who cares when Adam is so swoonworthy on his own. I am crushing so hard on Mr. Kingsley!

Adam is the stereotypical “fuck ‘em and leave ‘em” type. He holds everything that could hurt him very close to the vest.  Even his closest friends and business partners don’t know the man under the veneer.  He’s a good man. Scared and scarred, but a good man; according to Kathryn.

As the story unfolds, I was riveted. And I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this “playboy” called out for his treatment of women and watching him lust after Kathryn while being drawn into her world of Tantra. Except for once in his life, it’s not just the sex luring him in. It’s the woman. And he is adorable in his pursuit and in his thoughts while being brought to his knees by their undeniable connection.

“When I sneeze the markets react. Alerts are sent out to Wall Street. But this woman’s feelings make me buckle. I’m amazed at myself and perplexed by her. No one has ever had this kind of power over me.”

When Adam’s life is threatened in a revenge plot by a former business partner, Adam seeks refuge with Kathryn. Kathryn gives Adam a “curious beginner’s” lesson in the art of Tantra and a damn is broken in Adam.  My heart was hurting for him, but also rejoicing because he may have found a woman who can help him put himself back together.

“Right now, possibly for the first time in my entire life, I want a woman. I don’t just want a fuck or quick head.” Then it suddenly dawns on me and I understand what she’s been trying to tell me about sex versus fucking. I see the difference now. It’s as clear as a sunny day.”

But just as Adam has his epiphany and things are looking brighter for him, the investigation into the former business partner brings to light a mistake from Adam’s past that rocks him with its implications. Adam turns to Kathryn once again and… we have to wait until December 2013 for more from the Touch of Tantra series by Liv Morris. And while I usually scream and rant about my hate for cliffhangers, this one was worth it! Every word was gold for me and I will be stalking Liv Morris on social media while waiting for more.

Review: Axel by Harper Sloan

Note from the author–This book is intended for a mature reading audience and isn’t suitable for younger readers. Brash language, sexual hotness, delectable alpha males, some violence and adult situations are all over this book–you have been warned.
Fate hasn’t always been friends with Isabelle West. In fact, fate has been a downright bitch.
Isabelle has learned the hard way how hard life can be when fate isn’t by your side. It can hand you dreams on silver platters, but it can snatch them right back and hand you nightmares. One thing Isabelle knew for sure fate was consistent with was taking away everything she ever loved.
For the last two years Isabelle has been slowly clearing the clouds of her past. Happiness is finally on the horizon. She has a thriving business, great friends, and her life back. All she has to do is jump over the last hurdle…her ex-husband.
When problems start causing her to fear her new life, and memories that are better left forgotten start rushing to the surface the last thing she needs is a ghost from her past to come knocking on her door.
Axel never thought he would look into the eyes of Isabelle West again, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to now. He’s carried his anger for so long he isn’t sure he can just turn it off, but when he is faced with protecting her and an unexpected desire to have her again, life gets a little more complicated.
How will Axel and Isabelle deal when all their cards are put on the table and everything they thought was true blows up in their faces?

Mandy’s Review

Rating 4.5/5

So once again, I am listening to my mother.  She called this book “YUM” so I decided to give it a whirl. And what a whirl!  By all of the comments in social media world, I was expecting more smut and less story, but Harper Sloan’s Axel is the whole package (the book and the man).  This is the first book for Harper Sloan and also the first in a series called Corps Security. I cannot wait for more! It was hot, steamy, suspenseful, and heartwarming.

Izzy has felt loss and heartache in unimaginable ways and through it all, she has held her first love, Axel, in a tight grip in her heart. Believing he was dead, Izzy tried to move on with her life, but fate smacked her back down and found her with a monster for a husband. The book takes place two years after Izzy has left her husband. She’s rebuilding her life and in walks Axel. I cried with Iz, and I yelled at Axel to be nice to her. Couldn’t he see how broken she was? I was chomping at the bit to see them reunite, but they had some serious wires crossed and bigger problems to deal with before I would get what I wanted.

In the meantime, Harper Sloan gives us a great cast of characters to love. Izzy’s best friends, Greg and Dee, were perfect and I hope we see them get their HEAs before the series is over. They move mountains (and their lives) to help Izzy get her life back. Greg and the Corps Security boys are all uber-Alpha overprotective hot guys. The whole bunch reminded me of our favorite gang from Fortnum’s and if Ms. Sloan continues to write such engaging and panty melting stories, then she may give Ms. Ashley a run for the money. The friendships and history draw you in and have you rooting for everyone to find their happy.

Axel and Izzy have a love that overcomes all obstacles and Axel is just so darn easy to love. Seeing Izzy get her spunk back and watching them heal old wounds and move forward was priceless. Harper Sloan delivers a book that melts your panties and your heart. One of my favorite lines- “Get over here and give your man some love.”

Well, what are you waiting for? You heard the man!
