- Review: Axel by Harper Sloan (rawbooks.wordpress.com)
Greg Cage was born to protect. While growing up, he was his mother and sister’s shield against the world… until he failed. For the last decade, he has carried that guilt and need for vengeance around… until it was stripped from him. Now, with his best friend getting married and no longer needing his protection, he is even more lost, completely adrift, and desperate for some control. All he has ever known was how to protect: his family, his friends, and his country. Can he go against everything he has ever known, and give up that control?
Melissa Larson will never let anyone hold the reins in her life. She has been the rock in her family for more years than she can remember, and the fight to keep them together is her main priority right now. She has always been fiercely independent and proud. The last thing she will ever do is ask for someone else’s help. But when that choice is out of her control, forcing her to rely on others to save her and her family, and pick up the pieces that are left, will she be able to let someone else be her strength?
The second Greg locks eyes with Meli, he knows that she is someone he needs. Someone he craves. Meli knew the second she met Greg that he would be nothing but trouble and heartache. Her life takes an unexpected turn, and that bitch Fate is back to wreak more havoc on another member of the Corps family.
All hell breaks loose, leaving Greg no choice but to call in a favor. He hooks back up with his old friend Braxxon Breaker from the Breakneck MC. Together, they make sure that nothing threatens anyone Greg loves again.
CAGE is a complete story with a HEA.

Another fantastic installment in the Corps. Security series. Seriously, this book was just as engaging as the first one, Axel. Greg Cage wasn’t as alpha as Axel and he had some serious guilt issues holding him back, but he’s such a sweetheart that you can’t help yourself as you swoon all over your e-reader for him. And Melissa is a great match for him. She’s feisty and independent, but she too has guilt over a sister and a life that demands her presence and that keeps her from attaching herself to a man.
Despite reservations and past guilts and hurts, Greg and Melissa have some intense chemistry and neither one can deny the connection between them. This book wasn’t nearly as emotional as the first book, but the hot as shit Corps. Security boys and the dynamic interactions and dialogue between this group of characters make for a wonderful read. Nothing too angsty, so your panties are safe from bunching. But it is scorching hot between Greg and Melissa. (He has “decorations” that make for some extra fun during the sexy times.) And the family that circumstance brings together is heartwarming and exactly what Greg needs to fill his need to protect and control. When that family is hurt and shit hits the fan, Greg Cage steps up and does whatever is necessary for his family. Enter, Braxxon Breaker and a super cool series crossover with Crystal Spears’s Breakneck series.
While Greg and Melissa’s story is certainly the focus of Cage, there’s plenty of other love stories playing out in the rest of the Corps. Security world. I am anxious to see if Dee and Beck can ever figure their shit out and if Locke will ever see Emmy as something more than the front desk girl. Harper Sloan has delivered another great storyline filled with a cast of characters that you can love and relate to and I will certainly be waiting for more.

I walked into Cage with very high expectations after reading Axel, the first book in the Corps Security series. Overall, Cage was a good book, I enjoyed reading it, but I didn’t love it. The story itself delivered, and I loved Melissa, she was a cool chick. Where I got caught up is that Cage himself was not the full out alpha I expected from my impression of him in Axel. That being said, I get why he is of the softer alpha variety, and ultimately I think it makes his character a better match for Melissa than if he was of the rougher type, that I prefer. This by no means is going to stop me from wanting to read the rest of this series, or other books by Harper Sloan. I do like her writing style, this just wasn’t my favorite.

Honestly for me, Cage was a great, well-written, easy read and had everything a romance story should. Including bad ass alphas, broken hearts, and sizzling sex, leading up to a beautiful happy ending. Not one of my all time favorites, but definitely entertaining. We first meet Greg Cage in Axel as Izzy’s over protective and lovable best friend. He was strong, dominate, and the perfect gentleman so I was excited when I heard his book was the second in the Corps Security series. His love-interest, Melissa Larson, is the perfect yin to his yang. She is vivacious, strong, and just as equally damaged. Their relationship allows them to overcome devastating tragedies from both their pasts and create their own little slice of heaven. The most twisted part about their story is the unique way their personal history is intertwined. Definitely creative, I’ll give Ms. Sloan a high five on that one. But beyond that, I felt moments that should have been highly intense fell a little flat and to be blunt- made Greg look like a pussy. And I have to know, what is up with this growing new trend to bedazzle a dude’s cock? I mean, am I missing something? Now, don’t get me wrong, while I wasn’t losing my shit over this book, I’ll most definitely be reading Beck’s story which is the next one in the series and I’m dying for Maddox’s as well. He is number 4! Maddox Locke better throw us for a loop or I’m going to be very depressed.
About The Author:
Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed ‘Estrogen Ocean’, much to her husband’s chagrin. Harper has a borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her with her ereader attached. As an ex-reviewer and blogger, Harper’s passion for reading runs deep. It wasn’t until ‘Axel’ decided to take up residence that she realized her true calling.
She started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn’t take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.

While the chaos and bloodshed have slowed for a short period, life is never quiet in the world of Breakneck. The club is taking time to regroup from internal betrayal and the changing of the guard in a rival group.
Zig Zag became a father at the age of thirteen. While raising a child has never been easy, now his eighteen year old daughter Tatiana makes his life downright hard. She has caught the eye of Travis, the new President of the rival MC Gunners, but all she really wants is Shadow, the newest addition to the Breakneck family. When Shadow’s rejection sends Tatiana running from the only family, home, and safety she’s ever known, ZZ is crazy with worry. The distraction caused by Tatiana’s disappearance could prove to be Zig Zag’s downfall.
If that isn’t enough, ZZ finds himself rampantly attracted to the one and only Storm. She’s beautiful, quick and witty. Their friendship is the one thing that keeps him from growing crazy, and Storm stands by ZZ through all the turmoil. Zig Zag is not accustomed to hearing the word no, so Storm’s constant withstanding just draws him in deeper. Their friendship is one thing keeping him from going crazy, until one night…
The club is regrouping and rebuilding from the mayhem known as the Russian Mafia. A hit is ordered on Tatiana, Storm, Winter, and Piper.
Tatiana’s egg donor reveals secrets that a thirteen year old Zig Zag was too young to understand.
Braxxon is out of reach while he helps Greg Cage deal with some dirty business.
Bloodshed… Secrets… Betrayal… Trauma… Welcome back to the Breakneck world.
Note: Withstanding Me is Book #2 in the Breakneck Series. Reading the first book, Seize Me, is advised for ultimate enjoyment and understanding of this book.
Rating 4.5 out of 5
I didn’t expect to like Withstanding Me as much as Seize Me. I wasn’t crazy about ZZ’s character in Seize Me, so wasn’t expecting much. I think I need to walk into more books not expecting much, because I freaking loved this one more than the first! Crystal Spears is fast becoming an author on my list of “must read everything by this author”. I only have a handful on that list. Before I rattle on about how fabulous ZZ and Storm are, I really need to spend a moment raving about Crystal Spears’s writing style.
So, I believe that first person perspective is difficult to do successfully. I’ve seen it go awry more than once in a book. Going back and forth between the two main characters is confusing if not done right. Being able to not only do that, but then flip to minor character’s point of view is serious skills. I think it adds a depth to character and plot development that is not used often enough. I love feeling like I’m not just reading a story, but that I am IN the story, and that is so much more satisfying at the end of the day. Before I forget, I have a quick word about the way the slang is written. Sometimes, slang can be really irritating, but I am going back to what I said a moment ago about feeling like I am in the story. Slang, when used properly (as is the case in this series), makes a story a much richer experience.
ZZ and Storm: Freaking fabulous. The push and pull between them throughout was agonizingly delicious. Half the book felt like foreplay, but how Storm held out so long, I have no clue. ZZ…so much more than just a super HOT body. The raw emotion he felt for his friends and family was so refreshing, and it made me warm and mushy how he treated not only Storm, but his other loved ones as well. And Storm was so sweet and beautiful. Her background would not normally leave behind the amazing woman her character was. She’s someone, that if she existed in real life, I would have a deep admiration for.
The story itself was awesome. Lots of twists and a few heart-wrenching scenes. Definitely some shit that I did not see coming. There was some background detail regarding ZZ that I thought could have been expanded on, but I have a feeling that it is going to be in Tatiana’s story. I’m now going to go pretend that I’m not dying for Shadowing Me to be released.

I am a sucker for biker books. Who am I kidding? I’m a sucker for most books, but bikers do it extra dirty. I gravitate toward the dirty. And Crystal D. Spears can write dirty. She holds nothing back in her books. They are full of violence, sex, drugs, and vengeance. These books are not for the faint of heart. Seize Me was a fantastic introduction into the Breakneck world and I thoroughly loved it! Winter is the shit! Withstanding Me was equally if not more enjoyable. Crystal wrote Withstanding Me with a more rugged voice than Seize Me and we also got to see things from more characters’ points of view. It gives us some extra insight into the action and the players involved and makes the book and the Breakneck family that much more “real” for the reader.
These are not hearts and flowers romance books. Shit is going down and people die. There are a lot of characters at play. I am totally in love with Sniper- hope his story is coming soon! And I have a soft spot for Shadow even if he is a moron for turning away Tatiana. But the focus of Withstanding Me is ZZ and Storm. ZZ has a messed up past, but he makes no excuses. I like that in a man. Storm is a strong woman, but she withstands ZZ even when it makes her heart hurt. She makes it very clear that she is not just “pussy” and ZZ will not get a piece until he’s ready for more. ZZ tries to resist the siren call that is Storm but the more she denies him the more he practically follows her like a love sick puppy. And the best part is that this big bad biker doesn’t even realize that he loves the shit out of her, until he does. But it takes a lot for them to reach that conclusion. Lots of blood and plenty of revealed secrets kept me turning the pages as fast as I could.
Overall, Withstanding Me was a great read. My only complaint is that the editing is a little rough. I get that the bikers are rough and their language reflects that, but there are still grammar rules to follow that would push the book that much farther for me. I really try to overlook editing errors and judge based on the writing and the story/message that an author is trying to convey. But commas and such are important. Writing can reflect the dialect and roughness of the characters while respecting grammar rules. I’m such a buzzkill. But when I agree to provide a raw review in exchange for a book, I’m not gonna lie. And I am rarely tactful. SO, let me just put it this way: Crystal D. Spears has immeasurable talent. The Breakneck world is written with all of the raw, gritty details that it needs and deserves. The stories are original and riveting. The men are hot and the women are hotter. And I will read the next one, and the next one. Commas be damned!

But wait, there’s more…
Love Crystal Spears? Love Harper Sloan? Well, they have done a series crossover between the Breakneck Series & the Corps. Security Series. Characters intertwine with surprise cameos. You should probably read Withstanding Me by Crystal first, THEN Cage by Harper Sloan!!
But then you have to read Axel before Cage, and Seize Me before Withstanding Me. It’s almost too HOT to comprehend!
And watch for our review of Cage during Harper Sloan’s Blog Tour.
Note from the author–This book is intended for a mature reading audience and isn’t suitable for younger readers. Brash language, sexual hotness, delectable alpha males, some violence and adult situations are all over this book–you have been warned.
Fate hasn’t always been friends with Isabelle West. In fact, fate has been a downright bitch.
Isabelle has learned the hard way how hard life can be when fate isn’t by your side. It can hand you dreams on silver platters, but it can snatch them right back and hand you nightmares. One thing Isabelle knew for sure fate was consistent with was taking away everything she ever loved.
For the last two years Isabelle has been slowly clearing the clouds of her past. Happiness is finally on the horizon. She has a thriving business, great friends, and her life back. All she has to do is jump over the last hurdle…her ex-husband.
When problems start causing her to fear her new life, and memories that are better left forgotten start rushing to the surface the last thing she needs is a ghost from her past to come knocking on her door.
Axel never thought he would look into the eyes of Isabelle West again, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to now. He’s carried his anger for so long he isn’t sure he can just turn it off, but when he is faced with protecting her and an unexpected desire to have her again, life gets a little more complicated.
How will Axel and Isabelle deal when all their cards are put on the table and everything they thought was true blows up in their faces?
So once again, I am listening to my mother. She called this book “YUM” so I decided to give it a whirl. And what a whirl! By all of the comments in social media world, I was expecting more smut and less story, but Harper Sloan’s Axel is the whole package (the book and the man). This is the first book for Harper Sloan and also the first in a series called Corps Security. I cannot wait for more! It was hot, steamy, suspenseful, and heartwarming.
Izzy has felt loss and heartache in unimaginable ways and through it all, she has held her first love, Axel, in a tight grip in her heart. Believing he was dead, Izzy tried to move on with her life, but fate smacked her back down and found her with a monster for a husband. The book takes place two years after Izzy has left her husband. She’s rebuilding her life and in walks Axel. I cried with Iz, and I yelled at Axel to be nice to her. Couldn’t he see how broken she was? I was chomping at the bit to see them reunite, but they had some serious wires crossed and bigger problems to deal with before I would get what I wanted.
In the meantime, Harper Sloan gives us a great cast of characters to love. Izzy’s best friends, Greg and Dee, were perfect and I hope we see them get their HEAs before the series is over. They move mountains (and their lives) to help Izzy get her life back. Greg and the Corps Security boys are all uber-Alpha overprotective hot guys. The whole bunch reminded me of our favorite gang from Fortnum’s and if Ms. Sloan continues to write such engaging and panty melting stories, then she may give Ms. Ashley a run for the money. The friendships and history draw you in and have you rooting for everyone to find their happy.
Axel and Izzy have a love that overcomes all obstacles and Axel is just so darn easy to love. Seeing Izzy get her spunk back and watching them heal old wounds and move forward was priceless. Harper Sloan delivers a book that melts your panties and your heart. One of my favorite lines- “Get over here and give your man some love.”
Well, what are you waiting for? You heard the man!
