While the chaos and bloodshed have slowed for a short period, life is never quiet in the world of Breakneck. The club is taking time to regroup from internal betrayal and the changing of the guard in a rival group.
Zig Zag became a father at the age of thirteen. While raising a child has never been easy, now his eighteen year old daughter Tatiana makes his life downright hard. She has caught the eye of Travis, the new President of the rival MC Gunners, but all she really wants is Shadow, the newest addition to the Breakneck family. When Shadow’s rejection sends Tatiana running from the only family, home, and safety she’s ever known, ZZ is crazy with worry. The distraction caused by Tatiana’s disappearance could prove to be Zig Zag’s downfall.
If that isn’t enough, ZZ finds himself rampantly attracted to the one and only Storm. She’s beautiful, quick and witty. Their friendship is the one thing that keeps him from growing crazy, and Storm stands by ZZ through all the turmoil. Zig Zag is not accustomed to hearing the word no, so Storm’s constant withstanding just draws him in deeper. Their friendship is one thing keeping him from going crazy, until one night…
The club is regrouping and rebuilding from the mayhem known as the Russian Mafia. A hit is ordered on Tatiana, Storm, Winter, and Piper.
Tatiana’s egg donor reveals secrets that a thirteen year old Zig Zag was too young to understand.
Braxxon is out of reach while he helps Greg Cage deal with some dirty business.
Bloodshed… Secrets… Betrayal… Trauma… Welcome back to the Breakneck world.
Note: Withstanding Me is Book #2 in the Breakneck Series. Reading the first book, Seize Me, is advised for ultimate enjoyment and understanding of this book.

I didn’t expect to like Withstanding Me as much as Seize Me. I wasn’t crazy about ZZ’s character in Seize Me, so wasn’t expecting much. I think I need to walk into more books not expecting much, because I freaking loved this one more than the first! Crystal Spears is fast becoming an author on my list of “must read everything by this author”. I only have a handful on that list. Before I rattle on about how fabulous ZZ and Storm are, I really need to spend a moment raving about Crystal Spears’s writing style.
So, I believe that first person perspective is difficult to do successfully. I’ve seen it go awry more than once in a book. Going back and forth between the two main characters is confusing if not done right. Being able to not only do that, but then flip to minor character’s point of view is serious skills. I think it adds a depth to character and plot development that is not used often enough. I love feeling like I’m not just reading a story, but that I am IN the story, and that is so much more satisfying at the end of the day. Before I forget, I have a quick word about the way the slang is written. Sometimes, slang can be really irritating, but I am going back to what I said a moment ago about feeling like I am in the story. Slang, when used properly (as is the case in this series), makes a story a much richer experience.
ZZ and Storm: Freaking fabulous. The push and pull between them throughout was agonizingly delicious. Half the book felt like foreplay, but how Storm held out so long, I have no clue. ZZ…so much more than just a super HOT body. The raw emotion he felt for his friends and family was so refreshing, and it made me warm and mushy how he treated not only Storm, but his other loved ones as well. And Storm was so sweet and beautiful. Her background would not normally leave behind the amazing woman her character was. She’s someone, that if she existed in real life, I would have a deep admiration for.
The story itself was awesome. Lots of twists and a few heart-wrenching scenes. Definitely some shit that I did not see coming. There was some background detail regarding ZZ that I thought could have been expanded on, but I have a feeling that it is going to be in Tatiana’s story. I’m now going to go pretend that I’m not dying for Shadowing Me to be released.

I am a sucker for biker books. Who am I kidding? I’m a sucker for most books, but bikers do it extra dirty. I gravitate toward the dirty. And Crystal D. Spears can write dirty. She holds nothing back in her books. They are full of violence, sex, drugs, and vengeance. These books are not for the faint of heart. Seize Me was a fantastic introduction into the Breakneck world and I thoroughly loved it! Winter is the shit! Withstanding Me was equally if not more enjoyable. Crystal wrote Withstanding Me with a more rugged voice than Seize Me and we also got to see things from more characters’ points of view. It gives us some extra insight into the action and the players involved and makes the book and the Breakneck family that much more “real” for the reader.
These are not hearts and flowers romance books. Shit is going down and people die. There are a lot of characters at play. I am totally in love with Sniper- hope his story is coming soon! And I have a soft spot for Shadow even if he is a moron for turning away Tatiana. But the focus of Withstanding Me is ZZ and Storm. ZZ has a messed up past, but he makes no excuses. I like that in a man. Storm is a strong woman, but she withstands ZZ even when it makes her heart hurt. She makes it very clear that she is not just “pussy” and ZZ will not get a piece until he’s ready for more. ZZ tries to resist the siren call that is Storm but the more she denies him the more he practically follows her like a love sick puppy. And the best part is that this big bad biker doesn’t even realize that he loves the shit out of her, until he does. But it takes a lot for them to reach that conclusion. Lots of blood and plenty of revealed secrets kept me turning the pages as fast as I could.
Overall, Withstanding Me was a great read. My only complaint is that the editing is a little rough. I get that the bikers are rough and their language reflects that, but there are still grammar rules to follow that would push the book that much farther for me. I really try to overlook editing errors and judge based on the writing and the story/message that an author is trying to convey. But commas and such are important. Writing can reflect the dialect and roughness of the characters while respecting grammar rules. I’m such a buzzkill. But when I agree to provide a raw review in exchange for a book, I’m not gonna lie. And I am rarely tactful. SO, let me just put it this way: Crystal D. Spears has immeasurable talent. The Breakneck world is written with all of the raw, gritty details that it needs and deserves. The stories are original and riveting. The men are hot and the women are hotter. And I will read the next one, and the next one. Commas be damned!
