Ms. Tyler sent us a copy of Sugar & Salt in exchange for a raw review and since it was a novella, I wanted to balk at reading it. I generally don’t enjoy novellas because they always feel rushed and/or incomplete to me. Sugar & Salt was surprisingly in depth for a novella. And it was really good. It is the introductory book in the Sugar House novella series and I will be reading future installments. Yep. I just admitted to wanting to read more novellas. Between Zoey Derrick’s Reason series and Pavarti K. Tyler’s Sugar House novellas, I just may be a convert.
Sugar & Salt focuses on the madam of the Sugar House and her need for a deeper connection than what she has allowed herself to be complacent with. She finds that connection and the banter is fantastic. Seriously witty and smart dialogue combined with a connection that is not just sexual but a whole lot more. But there are obstacles to overcome. I’ll let you read it for yourself to see how well Ms. Tyler paced the story and resolution. We are also given a glimpse and a teaser for the next installment in the series and I am so excited to see where we will be taken next.
Ok, I kind of rolled my eyes a little when Mandy told me we were reading this. It is so rare for me to like novellas. I just read too fast to find much enjoyment in what usually amounts to half a story or 100 pages of sex with the plot on the side. I decided to give it a chance because I was intrigued by the synopsis and figured if it stunk at least it was short. I was very pleasantly surprised by how well Sugar & Salt was written. The plot flowed, characters were well developed, and to top it off the sex was smoking hot. Great opposites attract story with lighter conversational banter to break up some of the heavier side of Jan and Devon’s obstacles to being together. I would have liked the ending tied with a neater bow, but it was still satisfying. I also have a feeling that Jan and Devon’s story is nowhere near done and will likely be a continuation through the whole series, but thankfully no cliffhangers! Throw in the subtle lead in to the next installment in the series (already in love with Portia and Jackson!) and I got a new author on my favorites list and a new series in my TBR.
