Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway- The Redhead Plays Her Hand by Alice Clayton

5 out of 5

Do I even need to write a review for this? Book 3 in the The Redhead Series is just a funny, sexy, witty, and fantastic as the first two books were. I expected nothing less from funny girl, Alice Clayton. Between the Redhead series and Wallbanger, you can keep yourself laughing and fanning yourself for days.

And that is the beauty of Alice Clayton. Take this quote from, The Redhead Plays Her Hand: “I took him into my mouth entirely, the words he uttered through clenched teeth were equal parts obscene and nonsensical. Nice to know I hadn’t lost my touch.” Her writing is the perfect blend of sexy and erotic mixed with hilarious characters that are so real, I feel like I’ve known them forever.

And I am not blowing smoke. You should know by now that I don’t deal in bullshit. Alice Clayton is a damn fine writer. And she makes me laugh. I don’t know if this is the last we will see of Jack and Grace. I certainly wouldn’t scoff at more, but if this was it; then kudos Ms. Clayton on a fantastic series. I love how the redhead played her hand!

The third sexy novel in USA TODAY bestselling author Alice Clayton’s playful and erotic Redhead series continues the sizzling romance between actress Grace Sheridan and Hollywood’s hottest leading man Jack Hamilton.

Grace has landed the lead in a new TV series—but when the director asks her to lose fifteen pounds, she goes public with her weight struggles and suddenly develops a huge fan club who support her right to have curves. But between that and the public’s continuing fascination with her “are they or aren’t they” relationship with Jack, Grace begins to wonder if anyone’s really interested in her because of her upcoming TV series, or if it’s all speculation about the size of her ass and her bedroom partner.

Meanwhile, Jack is voted the Sexiest Man Alive and becomes a little too enamored with the party-hard lifestyle. Grace vows to give him the space he needs to find himself, but then he begins to spiral down from lovable Brit to Hollywood brat. People are talking, but are Jack and Grace? Her career is on the rise, and his continues into the stratosphere, but will she be able to catch him if he falls? Will they ever be able to just be a couple who can hold hands when they walk down the street?

Okay, so first thoughts for this book are basically it’s going to be a typical mills and boon romance about pirates.  Oh, how wrong was I! I instantly fell in love with this book and the characters. It’s funny, scary, heartwarming and heartbreaking, to say the least. Yes, at times you just wanna smack Hendrix upside the head, but at other times you just want to give him a cuddle. Oh, and the sex, oh my the sexy scenes, let’s just say that you will certainly get very steamy and extremely hot (if you catch my drift). He’s sexy, controlling, and won’t take no for an answer but you just can’t help but fall in love with him. And when he calls her “inocencia” you just can’t help but swoon. Then there’s Indigo. She’s had a hard time of it recently and when she meets Hendrix you just know things are definitely not going to be any easier.  In short, this book was well written and well thought out, an absolute joy to read and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Favourite lines
“Why can’t a pirate watch a horror film?
He shakes his head, smirking. “You’re about to tell me.”
“Because it’s rated arrrrrrrrrr.”

“Why do pirates wear eye patches?”
“Because they can’t afford iPads.”

Finally, a new premise for a romance novel. Pirates. And not Jack Sparrow pirates, but modern day pirates. Yes, they’re real. Our heroine, Indigo (coolest name ever), in Enslaved by the Ocean runs from one trouble right into more trouble at the hands of pirates and what ensues was fun and sexy to read. Hendrix, our pirate Hero, is rugged and oh so yummy! I am still not sure what exactly he does as a pirate. He’s not a drug runner or a human trafficker, but he sure is a bad ass. But at the end of the day, who cares what he does? He’s hot and seems to have the best of intentions with each decision laid before him. And Indigo loves him and finds the fresh start she was looking for.

I enjoyed Enslaved by the Ocean. The characters were great. The dialogue quick and witty. The pacing was fast. This was a very short read for me. The sexy times were erotic and left me panting. Bella Jewel won our hearts with the MC Sinners series and her unique writing style continues in this new series. Yes, I said series. Bella will be giving us more yummy pirate goodness to drool over in Where Darkness Lies, which will be the second book in the Criminals of the Ocean series. I will be reading it. I need to know what happens after that bombshell of an epilogue.

From the first word to the last, Bella Jewel’s Enslaved by the Ocean, will captivate your attention. Struggling through a whirl wind of unexpected life changes, broken dreams, and regretful lust, the heroine Indigo hasn’t had an easy life. But unlike most heroines she doesn’t find happily ever after the conventional way, because Captain Hendrix is anything but conventional. I mean, what would you expect from a pirate? And poor Indie forced to make difficult decisions to keep her life and her heart safe, decisions that would break the average person. Thankfully everything turns around semi in her favor and we aren’t left with a giant cliff hanger. The entire concept was definitely refreshing but I felt rushed through the entire book. The major plot lines were glossed over and I didn’t have a chance to develop a strong connection to the characters like I wanted too. The sexy times were completely juvenile for my taste as well, and to be honest I skimmed over most of them. I’m still giving it a 4 because the plot line is extremely interesting and it is a really good book. The story just feels really incomplete, and yes there is a sequel about two other characters, but I need more. Hendrix is still on my shit-list and I’m not sure I can ever get over his “payment plan. “ (sorry, I don’t give shit away) That’s just kind of big, NOO for me… and he didn’t do anything worth redemption in my opinion. But I’m holding out hope that the sequel will fill me in and bring the story full circle. Until then, I guess Ill have to wait, damn it!

walked into this with pretty high expectations since I’ve read and loved all of Bella Jewel’s MC Sinners series, and I was definitely not disappointed.  I’ve never come across a modern day pirate tale, so I was excited, but still a bit skeptical about whether or not it would be worth reading.

This had everything I love about pirates, and even better, it left out the ripped and busting bodices synonymous with pirate tales.  Enslaved By The Ocean takes everything you’ve ever fantasized about being swept away by a pirate and brings it into this century.  I’m now dying to take a boat ride across the ocean in hopes of being marauded by Hendrix (drool!).

Ooh, I need to shake myself out before I get lost there.  Let’s put aside the pirate factor.  There was a lot to recommend outside of that aspect.  Indigo is an awesome chick.  She was dealt a really shitty hand and was able to persevere.  I love a strong and sassy chick, it makes it so easy to root for them to get their HEA.

Her friend, Eric, is a bit of a douchenozzle but I’m almost glad because I didn’t have to spend a minute hoping that Indigo would get with him.  Jess is a great character as well, major sweetness.  I really hope that one of the stories in this series gives her a chance to shine and get an HEA too.

Overall, this was a great read whether or not you like pirates, and if you’re a Bella Jewel fan this is a must-read!

A modern day pirate saga…  I was curious to see how Bella Jewel could take what I would typically consider a historical plot and make it modern.  And it was a good book, but I was hoping for a little more.  While I connected with Indigo, I felt the initial story and dialogue was a little forced to skip through Indigo’s story, introduce the best friend, Eric, and get straight to the pirate drama.  The pirates were a little cliche, drawing their swords and sailing on a ship with a mermaid on the bow.  But who am I to say what a modern pirate has for weapons and amenities in 2013.  They had guns too and did not hesitate to use them.

And then there is Hendrix.  Hendrix is tough and cruel, and his actions made him all the more believable as a pirate and consequently less likable, at least initially.  I struggled to see what Indigo could be attracted to.  But as the story progressed, the physical connection (and it was steamy!) sparked the emotional one.  The big, bad pirate, did indeed have that protective, caring side I was wondering about, and yes, I liked it.

This book has a lot of what you’d expect from a pirate story – pirate jokes, rum filled nights, tropical islands, and the old pirate crew.  I’m still not sure how a girl goes from life in the city to life with a pirate on the sea, but I’m going to add Where Darkness Lies to my to read pile to hopefully find out.

Indigo is running, she has no other choice. She’s done something bad, and there only way to escape it, is to flee her home, and her country. She sets out on a luxury Yacht, to take her to another country with her best friend Eric. But she runs into a problem.

The Yacht catches fire.

She ends up stranded in the ocean, terrified, and scared of the uncertain. Until they show up. The pirates. Terrified, Indigo and Eric have to face the reality that this might be the end for them. These are pirates, they are the criminals of the ocean. What chance have they got of surviving this nightmare?

Then she lays eyes on Hendrix. He’s the Captain, he’s gorgeous, rugged, and mean. He’s planning on keeping her to repay his debt to another man, by selling her. Now Indigo has a crazy ex after her, as well as a pirate she can’t seem to get out of her head.

Come on this heart wrenching, dark, angsty and dangerous adventure as two people so opposite, find something so beautiful.

“Stand up, this will be easier if you do,” he orders. He stands, taking me with him, and I lose my balance when I accidentally try to lift the wrong foot. Hendrix reaches out, taking my shoulder and goes to take a step forward to steady me, only to realize he’s wrapped the rope around his ankle, and is now tangled too. As if in slow motion, we topple backwards. I scream, and land with a thump on the ground as the ropes surround me. Hendrix lands over me, but manages to put his hand down to stop me taking the force of his body. He’s pressing into me in places he really shouldn’t be.

“Fuck,” he curses, tugging his hand to try and untangle it.

“How the hell did you get tangled too?” I cry out, squirming.

“Stop fuckin’ squirming like that,” he orders, and I stop as soon as I realize why he’s asked me to. He’s hard. My God, he’s hard.

“I’m fuckin’ hard because you’re squirming against me. I’m a man. Get over it.”

Blog Tour: Sempre: Redemption by JM Darhower

Sempre Cover

Raw Books was really looking forward to sharing our reviews with you during our stop on the blog tour. However, we were never provided with the ARC. The tour host told us that it was out of their hands and up to the publisher. The publisher never had the decency to respond to our emails. So there will be no review from us. We feel really bad  about the whole thing, but we did what we could and had zero success at getting assistance. I can’t conjure up a book before it releases. We in no way hold this against the author and truly recommend her work.

In this thrilling and sexy follow-up to Sempre, two young lovers struggle to keep their relationship intact after they become deeply enmeshed in the dangerous mafia-run crime ring they once tried to overthrow.

Haven Antonelli and Carmine DeMarco have been through a lot. Haven was taken in by Carmine’s father, and with his family’s help, she escaped a gruesome fate. However, saving Haven from the dark intentions of a mafia family cost Carmine a steep price: he was forced to swear loyalty to them.

Now, still passionately in love, Carmine and Haven must face the fall-out of Carmine’s forced service, as Haven discovers terrifying secrets about the family that enslaved both her and her mother—and why she matters so much in this intricate web of lies.

Carmine sat in his usual chair in the library, casually strumming his guitar. A sliver of light filtered in from the large window, illuminating his somber expression in the darkness. She called his name but he remained still, continuing to pluck at the strings almost as if he hadn’t heard her. She took a step toward him and was about to say his name again when he let out a long, deep sigh. “I had a dream.”

“Another nightmare?” she asked, walking over to him. He glanced up at her as his fingers stilled, the music stopping, but Haven barely noticed. She couldn’t focus on anything but the green eyes boring into her. Once so alive with passion, she saw nothing but deep sadness marring the bright color.

Carmine set the guitar aside and moved his legs to make room, motioning for her to join him. She climbed into his lap and he wrapped his arms around her.

“Not a nightmare this time,” he said. “It was a good dream.”

“What was it about?”

“You,” he said quietly. “You made a painting—some abstract shit, I don’t know—but it was so good they hung it in a museum and raved about how talented you were. It was like you were the next fucking Picasso, tesoro.”

She laughed. “I don’t even know how to paint, Carmine.”

“You could learn,” he said. “Would you want to?”

“Maybe, but I don’t know how good I’d be.”

“Oh, you’d be good,” he said confidently. “You shouldn’t doubt yourself. You can do anything you set your mind to.”

“Except for play the piano,” she said playfully. “Or the guitar.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, for the sake of everyone’s ears, we ought to leave music to me, but the rest is all you. You can probably do all of that, you know. Draw, paint, sculpt shit into weird shapes and tell people it’s something it doesn’t look anything like. That takes talent.”

She smiled. “And you think I have that kind of talent?”

“Of course,” he said. “There’s gonna be no stopping you once you get started.”

“Thank you,” she whispered, a swell of emotion surging through her at his words. “It means a lot that you believe in me.”

“I’d be an idiot not to,” he said, kissing the top of her head.

Blog Tour Review & Excerpt: Pieces For You by Genna Rulon

He smelled so damn good, clean with a hint of masculine sweat, a temptation I couldn’t resist.  Beyond my control, my tongue darted out of my mouth and covertly tasted the section of chest exposed above his tank.  Oh God, he tasted even better than he smelled, like a chocolate-covered pretzel—sweet, salty, and addictive.

“Did you just…lick me?” he asked, sounding both shocked and amused.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“You licked me.  I felt it,” he accused, but I noticed he wasn’t complaining.

“Your imagination is running wild because of all the workout endorphins.”

“It wasn’t a complaint.  In fact, you’re welcome to have another taste.”

“Fine…I licked you.  But it was an involuntary reflex—hot guy, exposed chest…you know how it is.”

“Mmm,” he replied, his eyes darkening with lust.  “I am familiar with the temptation, but it’s not a hot guy who’s testing my self-control…it’s a petite, auburn-haired vixen.”

Pieces For You floored me.  I was really looking forward to reading this after Only For You because Sam’s character was so full of lie and I was very invested in her after the attack, and I knew I wanted her to get her HEA (click here for mine and Mandy’s reviews).  Griffin was also introduced and he made my heart speed up a little.

I got so much more than I was expecting.  I’ve read other stories with rape victims, and more often than not, the “incident” is brushed over and the girl is magically cured and moves on as if nothing happened.  Genna Rulon wrapped her arms around the subject and put me inside Sam’s head and dragged me along through the roller coaster of her healing process.  I cried…I never cry.  Never.  I desperately wanted to take Sam’s pain away.  I was fully invested through every step forward and back she took.

Griffin, sigh, he’s so wonderful.  I want a man like Griffin.  He knew exactly what Sam needed every step of the way to help her through.  He pushed her forward when needed, and stood back ready to catch her if she faltered.

Aside from all of the above, the story was overall well done.  It would have been easy to rely only on the rape and recovery as the only basis for the story, but there was much more involved, but I won’t spoil anything.  This is definitely a must read for anyone!

One last thing:  Rape is a very serious and delicate subject and I applaud Genna Rulon for her skill in the telling of Sam’s story.  To add one more reason to go out and buy this immediately, Genna notates in her acknowledgements that part of the proceeds will go to RAINN (Rape Abuse and Incest National Network).  If you would like to learn more or show your support:

The prologue of this book actually made mean old me tear up. I identified with Sam on so many levels in this book. Her pain and her strength were awe inspiring. Genna Rulon did a phenomenal job at capturing  the emotions and the healing process. She surreptitiously gave a lot of fantastic and absolutely true information about rape survivors, their feelings, and how it effects not only the survivor, but their loved ones as well.

But don’t think this book is morose and sad. It’s not. It’s about healing and falling in love. It’s about the bonds of friendship. And it’s just as witty and fun as Only For You. With a heaping pile of deep emotions and a beautiful and overdue love story.

Sam’s coolness was solidified in Only For You and once she gets her healing on in Pieces For You, she is back and just as fun and awesome as before. But better because she has Griffin. And Griffin is definitely her other half. Griffin is perfect. I honestly can’t think of a negative thing to say about him. I was already swooning for him by 19% in, but then at 20% Genna gives us the first bit from Griffin’s point of view and if he wasn’t the perfect partner for Sam, I would fight and cut a bitch for him. He’s that yummy.

Pieces For You is stellar. A must read. Not a single complaint. Well written, great characters, well paced, interesting plot. Hot sexy times. It truly has it all. Go read it!!!! NOW!!

quote 4

I was waiting for Griff to exit the men’s locker room when a gym rat approached me from behind, nearly causing me to wet my pants when I discovered his body within inches of mine.  He leaned against the wall next to me with his arm resting above my head.  I felt caged and uneasy.

“Hey sexy, haven’t seen you here before.  Need me to show you how it’s done?  I know the manager—I can hook you up with a free month…in exchange for dinner?”

I was about to—I didn’t know what—run, scream, panic, tell him I wasn’t interested in his ‘free month’ if he was the last man on earth.  Then I heard it—a growl.  A deep menacing growl was coming from behind me, about a foot and a half above my head.  I slapped my hand over my mouth to stifle my snicker.

I couldn’t see Griffin and he didn’t say a word, but whatever his body language communicated, the dumbass in front of me clearly got the message because he turned tail and left, practically running.

I spun, hoping to catch a glimpse of ‘scary Griffin,’ but his face was devoid of all emotions, his eyes tracking my visitor’s departure.

“Excuse me,” I said to capture his attention.  “Did I just hear you growl at that moron, or am I hallucinating now, too?”

“I didn’t growl, it was a deep exhale.”

“Oh, an audible exhale that reverberated in your chest…like a growl,” I said before dissolving into giggles.

“I love that sound—you laughing.”

“Should I start calling you ‘Tony the Tiger’ now?  Wait…how about ‘Harry the Hippo’?”

“Hippos do not growl.”

“They absolutely do!  I took a zoology class for my science requirement sophomore year, and hippopotamuses, my growly friend, most definitely growl.”

“If I growled—and I admit nothing—but if I did, it was not a damn hippopotamus growl.  It was a tiger growl…no, a bear…I want to be a bear.”

“Alright, Yogi it is.  Come on, my furry friend, you promised me dinner.”

“Despite your torment, I do keep my promises.  Let’s go.”

“Do you have the picnic baskets in the car?” I teased, enjoying watching him squirm.

“No picnic baskets, I’m afraid.”

“Oh, is Boo-Boo bringing them?”

“The phoenix hope, can wing her way through the desert skies,
and still defying fortune’s spite; revive from ashes and rise.”  -Miguel de Cervantes

quote 5

In a classic male move, he grabbed the bottom of his tank and lifted it to wipe the dampness from his face.  My ravenous eyes snapped to his stomach.  I was greeted by one, two, three…eight, eight perfectly chiseled abdominal muscles.  The elusive eight-pack—I had heard rumors of its existence, seen pictures even, but I’d never encountered the phenomenon in person.  I reached up and pinched my arm to ensure I was not dreaming.  Ouch!  Nope, not dreaming.  My fingertips itched to touch him, to trace each and every line and crevice—suddenly a black wall of cotton obstructed my view.  Son of a bitch, it was criminal.  The man should not be allowed to wear a shirt…ever.

A Special Guest Appearance by Kallypso Masters

When Marc d’Alessio first rescued the curvaceous and spirited Italian Angelina Giardano at the Masters at Arms Club, he never expected her to turn his safe controlled life upside down and pull at his long-broken heartstrings. Months later the intense fire of their attraction still rages but something holds him back from committing to her completely. Worse, secrets and memories from his past join forces to further complicate his relationships with family, friends, and his beautiful Angel.

Angelina cannot give all of herself to someone who hides himself from her. She loves Marc, the BDSM world he brought her into, and the way their bodies respond to one another but she needs more. Though she destroyed the wolf mask he once wore, only he can remove the mask he dons daily to hide his emotions. In a desperate attempt to break through his defenses and reclaim her connection to the man she loves, she attempts a full frontal assault that sends him into a fast retreat, leaving her nobody’s angel once again.

Marc finds that running to the mountains no longer gives him solace but instead leaves him empty and alone. Angelina is the one woman worth the risk of opening his heart. Will he risk everything to become the man she deserves and the man he wants to be?

Buy Links:
Buy links are not available for Somebody’s Angel. We’ll post them as soon as we have them. Book is expected to release by Christmas.

Readers first met Marc D’Alessio in Masters at Arms (Free Introduction to the Rescue Me Series). Angelina Giardano came along in the opening chapter of Nobody’s Angel, which is primarily a story about her journey into the world of BDSM that she’s read about in novels and wants to explore.

In the weeks following the September 2011 release of Nobody’s Angel, Marc paid a visit to Siobhan Muir at her blog The Weird, The Wild and The Wicked. Because so few of my fans were on board with me at that time and probably never saw this, I thought it might be fun to share it again (with revisions) early in this Somebody’s Angel Blog Tour. Many of you will be new to the series, as well, so I’m starting the tour a little early so that you’ll have time to pick up your copy of the first two books at least. (I’ve put out a 99-cent combo of Masters at Arms & Nobody’s Angel, but you can still get Masters at Arms FREE). The target publication date of Somebody’s Angel is by December 22 (although it will go up as soon as it’s been thoroughly edited and is ready to go).

Originally, Marc and Angelina were supposed to be a subplot in Nobody’s Perfect (Rescue Me #4) and reach their Happily Ever After there. My characters love it when I plot and plan. They find my efforts quite amusing—then they go and do whatever they damn well please.

Interestingly, I was sharing a hotel room with fellow author, Siobhan Muir, at Authors After Dark in New Orleans in August 2012 when I was trying to finish Nobody’s Perfect. I was having trouble figuring out what to do about the bombshell Marc & Angelina dropped on me while writing that book. They also kept pulling me away from Damian and Savannah’s also serious issues. Siobhan is the one who suggested that Marc and Angelina’s needed their own space (in another book) to delve into their issues fully. (And now their new book book is longer than the one I cut them from!)

So, without further ado, here is an early interview with Marc. In this one, we’re in the time between when he meets Angelina in the opening pages of Nobody’s Angel, but before they are reunited a couple of chapters later.

Interview with Kallypso Masters’

Master Marc D’Alessio

Interviewed by author Siobhan Muir

Today I have a rare opportunity to speak with a true Master of BDSM, Master Marc D’Alessio from Denver’s Masters at Arms Club. The beginnings of Marc’s story was graciously written down by Kallypso Masters in Masters at Arms & Nobody’s Angel. His journey with the fair Angelina Giardano continues in the December 2013 release of Somebody’s Angel (Rescue Me #5).

NOTE: This interview takes place the week following Chapter One of Nobody’s Angel, before Marc is reunited with Angelina.

SM: Welcome, Master Marc, it is an honor to speak to you.

MM: It’s a pleasure to be here, Siobhan. That’s a beautiful name, by the way.

SM: Thank you. *Grins, flattered*

MM: Thank you for having me at your blog. I would like to correct you on one small point that people get confused about. I’m not sure there’s any such thing as a “master” at BDSM, or a perfect Dom. Master actually isn’t a title I relish or require submissives to use with me. I am still learning and have a very fine mentor, Master Adam Montague, who also happened to serve as my master sergeant in the Marines when we deployed together in Iraq. But I think he’d be the first to say he’s not a master either. We just try to be perfect in the moment with the subs who put their trust in us.

SM: You make an excellent point. However, I’d say the true masters are the ones who say they are not. But we should get on with the interview.

When did you first recognize your need for BDSM love?

MM: Actually, someone else recognized it. I was seventeen and working at my family’s ski resort in Aspen when a bored guest called me to her room and introduced me to bondage and domination. It wasn’t long before Master Marco was born and I became one of the best-kept secrets at the resort. Mama didn’t find out about it until long after Master Marco had been retired.

SM: If Master Marco has retired, how did you get back into BDSM and what forms do you practice?

MM: *Grins* Well, I didn’t totally lose interest in BDSM. I had a roommate at Camp Pendleton when I was training with the Marines. He had all the wrong ideas about BDSM and, a week before we deployed to Iraq, I dragged him up to LA to show him what BDSM could be like between consenting adults. I most prefer bondage and domination, but can deliver discipline if necessary. I do not get off bringing pain to my submissives, unless it’s in a “funishment” when punishment or discipline is delivered in a role-play scene, such as the “bad school girl,” or such.

SM: *Matches his grin* I’ve been known to be a bad girl. Mr SM tells me all the time. *winks* Was that how you become a part owner of the Masters at Arms Club?

MM: No, when I went to Iraq, I had no plans to start a BDSM club, but then I got wounded and was at loose ends. I knew I couldn’t go back to Aspen. I was dying cooped up inside an office at the family resort. My master sergeant told me about his plans to start a kink club in Denver, and I jokingly said I might like to help him get it started. Well, it took us a while to get the club off the ground. The third partner, Damián, had some serious shit to recover from and we waited until he was on his feet *glances away with a pained expression* before we launched it four years ago. In retrospect, I’m not sure if we banded together to run a BDSM club so much as we had bonded in Fallujah and didn’t want to lose touch with each other. None of us had anywhere to go, so we joined forces and have become a family, of sorts. Another member of my Marine recon unit, Grant, joined us earlier this year. She’s our resident Domme, although she does bottom for Master Adam when he needs someone for a demonstration or…well, whatever. But he describes her as more subordinate than submissive. *Smiles wryly*

SM: That must be an interesting relationship.

MM: *Laughs* Definitely interesting. Two strong alpha dominants scening together is always something to see.

SM: What’s your main job at the club? Do you have a specialty?

MM: It’s definitely not running the business end of things, that’s for sure. I’m happy to leave that to Adam. *Laughs * I haven’t been at the club much this past year, but I used to train the unattached submissives. Damián took over that job while I was gone. I also gave weekend sessions for new Doms and new members on how to get the most of their scenes, especially at the club. I’ll probably be taking up those activities again soon after an incident at the club last month with a pretty Italian girl. *smile fades * We don’t like to have poser or abusive Doms scening in the club. There are a lot of Tops/Doms/Masters who just don’t get that BDSM is not about abuse. We have a poster hanging at the club that reads: one word will stop a BDSM scene, but no amount of words will stop an abusive one.

Of course, my specialty is anything in the medical room, given that I was a Navy corpsman (what civilians might call a medic) for the Marine unit I served with. My nickname was “Doc.” I also enjoy sensual flogging and plan to demonstrate the Florentine flogging technique at the club in the coming months. Spankings and light paddling are favorites, as well.

SM: What is the “Florentine flogging technique” and how is it different from other flogging techniques?

MM: Florentine flogging is done with two identical or similar floggers. I prefer using leather or suede ones with 18-24-inch strands. After warming up the sub, I use a rhythmic, alternating motion of downward strokes from a flogger in each hand to the safe muscular areas of the upper back, ass, and thighs. Having the two floggers striking in such rapid succession is very intense for the sub–and for the Dom, as well. *Smiles*

SM: *Shivers with a grin* Does your family know about your work at the club?

MM: Unfortunately, yes, they do. I was training my little brother, Alessandro, to take over running things at the resort the night before I reported to Great Lakes for naval boot camp, and I had an emergency call from a guest in one of the remote cabins. When we went inside, we found the guest—an older woman—naked, kneeling, a riding crop between her teeth, and asking which of us was Master Marco. I deflected the situation and told Sandro to forget what he’d seen because Master Marco had been retired, but eventually he blabbed to Mama. I think he was trying to get himself out of trouble when the fetish magazines he subscribed me to while I was training at Camp Pendleton started coming to him after I deployed. Porn isn’t allowed in Iraq. *Sighs* Anyway, I don’t know what you know about Italians and their Mamas, but when she insisted that I wear a mask while in public scenes at the club, in case any of her friends from Aspen should show up there, I had to comply.

SM: Why do you think your patrons need this kind of love/sexual release?

MM: BDSM isn’t always about sex. Most of my scenes are strictly about control, domination, bondage. I enjoy getting bottoms or subs off sexually, but I don’t go beyond that in most scenes at the club. I’ve only taken it further sexually a few times and it hasn’t really been very…satisfying for me. Women tend to want more than I’m willing to give, so my motto is KISS—Keep It Superficial, Stupid.

There are lots of reasons why the BDSM lifestyle and scene attracts people. We tend to be a very open and welcoming community because all of us have been labeled freaks at some time. When you’re on the fringes of “polite” society, you tend to overlook the imperfections of others. We don’t judge other people and their kinks. BDSM is a spectrum. While I tend to stick to bondage and domination, others enjoy kink on the other end of the spectrum with edge play (knives, fire, needles, blood). We don’t see a lot of that at the Masters at Arms, although there are some who are into hardcore sadomasochism, including cathartic whippings.

Master Damián is what’s known as a Sadist Service Top. He’s told me the lifestyle helped him regain some control over his life after what happened in Fallujah when he lost his foot. But he’ll only deliver that level of pain on submissives looking for it. I’ve never seen him draw blood. He’s not into that. But watching him stripe someone’s back with a single-tail whip is really a thing of beauty. And the masochistic subs love him and come back again and again.

There also are those who’ve been abused sexually whose sexual identity is wired to find some of the same types of activities arousing now. We always ask our new members to share what their triggers are, and sometimes we find triggers they weren’t even aware of. But they find some sense of regaining control, whether as a top or bottom by practicing BDSM. I’m no psychologist or anything. Those are just some of the things I’ve seen and heard.

SM: Why do you need this kind of love?

MM: *Squirms in the chair* Who said anything about love? As I said, it’s not about commitment for me. It’s more of a…hobby. These days, I’m happier going wilderness trekking, skiing, working on the mountain search-and-rescue squad. I’m not looking for love. *Siobhan raises an eyebrow* There was this woman . . . Let’s just say it didn’t end well and I’ve pretty much been avoiding anything serious ever since.

It probably has to do with trust. You have to develop a strong level of trust with whoever you scene with. That’s not easy for everyone, myself included. So, no, I’m not looking for love.

SM: I understand you recently rescued a submissive from an abusive Dom. Can you explain a little about what happened and why you chose to step in?

MM: Ah, yes. Last weekend. Well, I’ve been volunteering as the Dungeon Monitor Supervisor lately, since I haven’t really been into doing any scenes. Dungeon Monitors—or DMs—patrol the club during regular hours trying to keep an eye on the scenes and activities and to make sure things are kept safe for everyone. This girl was new to the BDSM lifestyle and her Dom—I use the term loosely, because I think he really was one of those posers I was telling you about earlier—was flogging her and she seemed to be in distress. It’s really hard for a DM to tell what level of pain a sub is into, so it took me a few minutes of observing to see she didn’t appear to be enjoying the scene and might be in physical danger. I’m not sure how familiar you are with BDSM or fetish club rules, but a DM isn’t allowed to interrupt a scene or touch a scene participant. Once I got permission to examine her, I quickly realized she’d gone into deep subspace. Subspace is what it’s called when the sub’s mind and body disconnect. For experienced subs, it’s often a goal. But if it goes too deep, especially for a newbie sub like she was, it can cause hallucinations and medical issues. So, I put an end to the scene and provided aftercare to bring her back into her body.

SM: What exactly is “aftercare” and what does it entail?

MM: Even in a good BDSM scene, the sub gives so much to the Dom. The experience can be very intense, even more so in a scene that hasn’t gone well. It’s important for the Dom to take time to ensure that the sub is safe, protected, nurtured after a scene. I like to hold her in my lap and wrap her in a warm blanket, talk with her about the scene, just help her slowly reintegrate if she’s been in subspace, or process the feelings the scene might have brought out.

SM: *Cocks head to one side* Did you feel a connection with the woman when you rescued her?

MM: *Stares at his hands* Connection? I cared about her safety and her well-being. She didn’t deserve to be abused or taken advantage of in that way. No one does. I did want to check up on her later, but one of the club’s rules is confidentiality and she signed her membership forms asking for anonymity. So, Adam wouldn’t reveal any contact info for her. She doesn’t live in Denver, so I doubt I’ll ever see her again.

SM: What did Master Adam do about the abusive dom?

MM: Kicked his ass out and banned him for life. We also shared the information with other club owners in the area, in case he shows up there. None of us owners at the Masters at Arms Club will tolerate that kind of behavior. We run a friendly, healthy, “nice” club and plan to keep it that way. I wish we’d have the woman he abused to come back and try us again. I’d be interested in showing her the difference between what she experienced before and what the experience could be like with someone who listens to her needs and wants, honors her limits and safe word. Someone who knows about authentic BDSM. But I have a feeling she’ll not want anything more to do with this lifestyle after what happened. That’s the real pity. That asshole ought to be strung up by his…well, severely punished for doing that to her.

SM: I hope you get that opportunity, Master Marc, if she does come back. All the best of luck with the club and thank you so much for coming today to talk about your story.

MM: My pleasure. Stop by the club sometime. I’m sure we can arrange the perfect scene for you, Siobhan.

SM: *Laughs with a sultry smile* I might just do that.

Kally Loves Having Readers Join Her on this Journey

Kally profile from Bookie Award pic cropped

Official Bio:

Kallypso Masters writes emotional, realistic Romance novels with dominant males (for the most part) and the strong women who can bring them to their knees. She also has brought many readers to their knees—having them experience the stories right along with her characters in the Rescue Me series. Kally knows that Happily Ever After takes maintenance, so her couples don’t solve all their problems and disappear at “the end” of their Romance, but will continue to work on real problems in their relationships in later books in the series.

Kally has been writing full-time since May 2011 and Somebody’s Angel is her fifth book in the series, preceded by Masters at Arms & Nobody’s Angel (#1 and #2), Nobody’s Hero (#3); and Nobody’s Perfect (#4).

Kally lives in rural Kentucky and has been married for 30-1/2 years to the man who provided her own Happily Ever After. They have two adult children, one adorable grandson, and a rescued dog and cat.

Now, back to Kally:

As those who follow me on Facebook know, I involve readers in the process of writing and story telling, as well. I’ll pose questions to them or post updates as to my progress, thought processes, oh and, yes, the occasional tease. I have a timeline profile (you must send a message along with a friend request to claim one of the remaining 275 spots before Facebook cuts me off!), an author page (  you can follow, and even a series discussion group with 2700+ members there solely there to discuss this series. (To join the discussion group, send a friend request to Karla Montague (   Karla will add you to the group. Don’t be upset when she de-friends you after that. She’s strictly there to provide a portal to the group, which is where all the discussion takes place.)

I love meeting readers face to face, too (perhaps too much!). So if you are near any of my appearances (see my Web site for a list), stop by and say hello! You don’t have to buy a book—I’m happy to sign swag or e-reader covers or just give hugs and have photos taken!
