Brooke Anderson, a pretty, young manager in a Chicago consulting firm, finally sheds her boring boyfriend and is ready for a relationship that will grab her by the shoulders and shake her into consciousness. She could easily fall for Jack, an intense and handsome senior partner at her company. His passion for food, wine, and music is infectious, and his delightfully kinky sexuality threatens to rock Brooke’s world. But Marshall, a powerful but older CEO-type she meets also has an eye for her, and his dark sexuality draws Brooke closer with every turn. But is the man just too dangerous?
These two alpha males ultimately find themselves face-to-face in a testosterone-driven clash, but not before Brooke gets a taste of the mind-blowing emotion, off-the-charts sensation and unparalleled sexuality an intense relationship can bring.

Intense Passions is appropriately titled. This book is scorching, and very seductive and sexy. And all those other great ‘S’ words that make up good smut. I think I drove Lorraine a little nuts with my texts while reading. Here’s a sampling:
I’m 11% into Intense Passions and this book is sexy and has me immensely turned on. I have no idea where it’s going plotwise, but it’s fantastic writing. Very intelligent smut writing-if that makes sense. Tiffany Reisz comes to mind.
64% and I am pissed that I have to stop and make dinner.
I finished and it’s a damn cliffhanger! But so good leading up to it!
The book starts out with characters that I wasn’t sure how they would intertwine in a romantic way. Brooke has a live in boyfriend and JT is married. I was worried that this was a cheating book and those make me cringe- But it’s NOT! This book is a very intelligently written look at people and what makes a relationship and if one can be fulfilled without passion. It’s also a bit of an office romance. And can I repeat? It is scorching! I don’t know where Kalen has been hiding, but oh boy, she has a lifelong reader in me!
Brooke and JT (Jack) are great characters. Honestly, all of the characters were well developed. Even minor ones are described with a clarity that made this book so easy to get sucked into. I have a little crush on Brooke’s neighbor, Marshall. My fingers are crossed that we will see more of him in future installments. I love Brooke’s BFF, Cindy. She’s the perfect friend to Brooke. I haven’t decided if I like or dislike Karin, but I know that she’s not for Jack. Oh Jack. Jack is such a man, but he’s also incredibly sensitive. And funny. And charming. And very honest. I may want him for myself.
“I chuckle to myself because the women are always complaining about how cold it is in the office; the rumor that the managing partner keeps it colder because he enjoys the bumper crop of erect nipples it causes has been circulating for years. I don’t know if the rumor is true; I just enjoy being the beneficiary of how the chilly air affects Brooke.” –Jack
I have so many parts highlighted that I feel a little scattered trying to convey my thoughts to you on this book. It was just such great writing (and well edited) that I want to gush about so much and yet, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. This book spends a lot of time on set up and then takes off and is gearing up to be a great series. But it has a harsh cliffhanger. Right in the middle of a revealing conversation. Way to keep us on tenterhooks, Kalen Laurel. Well played! But cliffhanger or not- I will be reading anything that Kalen publishes. Hell, I’d read her to do list if it’s written as well as Intense Passions!

Intense Passions is aptly named. What I loved was that Kalen Laurel achieved this without turning it into soft porn, though there were some very steamy sex scenes. The plot was intricate, the characters were refreshing, and the whole book oozed sensual undertones. Heads up, this had a huge cliffhanger. You know, the kind where you turn the last page back and forth, hoping that more pages will magically appear.
The synopsis of this book had me completely confused, and unsure of whether or not I wanted to read this, but after reading it, I totally understand why it was so confusing. Anything more and it would have given the plot away. This is one of the only books I can think of that goes really in depth with the psychology involved with the lifestyle.
Most BDSM stories involve an experienced Dom setting his sights on the mousy secretary type. Brooke is an ambitious career woman with the world’s most boring boyfriend, but quite possibly has some submissive tendencies. Marshall and Jack are two potential love interests. There isn’t much I can tell you about Marshall, as his character is just starting to develop towards the end, but I have a feeling we’re going to get to know him more intimately in the next book. The one thing I can tell you is that he is most definitely an experienced Dom. Jack is a coworker of Brooke’s, on the verge of divorce, and in the process of discovering his own dominant nature. Jack most definitely wants to dominate Brooke. The internal conflict coming from both Jack and Brooke about their desires was thought provoking.
I can’t wait to see where this story is going!
About the Author
I’m Kalen Laurel, age 52, and I’m a mother, wife, mid-level manager, dog lover (and cats, too, but I’m allergic to them) and avid romance and erotica writer. Though I’ve written for years, I’ve just begun to be interested in officially sharing my stories with others.
I’m currently working on a novel about an unlikely couple who experience the ups and downs of getting to know each other’s sexual fantasies, limits, and compatibility. It’s mostly a love story with a bit of light BDSM. I hope to finish it this spring.
I decided to begin blogging in the hope I might find others willing to share their experiences, advice, and critiques with me.
