Review- BEATS by Kendall Grey

BEATSBEATS is Book 2 in the Hard Rock Harlots Series

WARNING: BEATS is specially formulated for horn dogs, porn oglers, smut peddlers, BDSM junkies, M/M and M/M/F addicts, DP dabblers, and lovers of A2M backdoor sexy times. If you don’t fall into these categories, can’t stomach hot man-on-man action, or if you have no idea what the above acronyms mean, please back away from BEATS now. This isn’t the book you’re looking for. Failure to heed this warning could inadvertently throw unauthorized users into a persistent vegetative state, or at the very least, require administration of a defibrillator to the chest and/or groin area. Nobody wants that.

For months, shy drummer Jinx Hardwick has been silently crushing on her tall, dark, and scary bandmate, Toombs Badcock. Drawn to his frightening ink and scars, she yearns to uncover the shadowy secrets lurking behind his silver eyes, but Jinx is too intimidated to even look at him, let alone talk to him. When she stumbles upon Toombs and their manipulative lead guitarist Rax in a compromising position, Jinx realizes her chances of winning Toombs’s heart aren’t just a long shot—they’re nonexistent. To make matters worse, Jinx’s family needs her at home. She’s about to back away from it all—Toombs, the band, her dreams of fame and fortune—when Rax makes her an offer she can’t refuse: a no-holds-barred night alone with Toombs. There’s one small catch. She has to go through Rax to get it.

TEAM RAXKendell Grey is one hell of a storyteller.  I loved Strings. It was funny and crass and the story under it all was heartwarming and entertaining. But Beats. Sigh. Beats has taken me away on a honeymoon of love and discovery and I don’t ever want to return. For those of you that thought Strings was too crass (you know who you are) but read it and liked it anyway- you are going to shit yourself over Beats! It is not Strings.  Same kick ass rock stars, but now we get the inner workings of Jinx.  And Jinx is not Letty. I love them both.  But I identified with Jinx on a scary level.  I understood her need to be a chameleon. I too have had many faces and roles forced upon me.  I too have felt like the Real Me was lost. (Most of the time, my Real Me is still lost.)

Beats is Jinx finding her Real Me.  And her Real Me is beautiful. And Toombs is the perfect dark to her light.  Seriously, I cried a few times while reading Beats. Kendell writes in a style unique to her, with vividly sexual prose and deep seated emotions that rock you. Sure, it’s erotica about a bunch of band members and there’s crude humor and funny banter between characters.

But if you pay attention and look with your Real eyes, you’ll see how much each character is feeling. And the feelings are hard core.  Jinx struggling to find her Real Me while basically every part of her life is at risk or struggling. (Sorry, not spoiling plot points.) Toombs. There’s more to him than you think and it’s beautiful too. As for Rax, I know everyone calls him the asshole and yes, he’s done some assholey things.  But I get him- I think. I’ll probably eat my words when Nocturnes releases. Rax has a hole in his soul that is aching to be filled. (How’s that for cliché?) Rax needs a woman that puts Rax above all else. He needs a pure love for himself. I don’t know his past, but there is a wound there that cut deep and took a piece of him. I can’t wait to see if he gets it back. But yeah, I did spend time during Beats wishing I could punch him in the face.

Beats was overall- fucking fabulous! Definitely a top read for me and one for my happy place, too! Jinx and Toombs- well, here’s a quote for you:

““What I’m saying here is sometimes the one you love introduces you to the person inside-the real one who you’re so close to, you don’t even recognize her. Sometimes the one you love knows you better than you know yourself. They bring out the best in us when we least expect it.””

Beats rocked it, hands down.  I had trouble putting this down, and I was pissed when I had to go to work and actually, well, do work.   This one delivered what the synopsis offered, but then offered up some surprises that made it better than I expected.

Jinx pulled me in and I was rooting for her from the first page to the last.  While shy, she had some definite lady balls, and she needed them to deal with Rax and Toombs.  I really wanted to kick the hell out of Rax a few times, and Toombs wasn’t far behind on jerk points.  Then I’d find myself totally melting over him in the next scene.  I loved Kendall’s use of the slow reveal on character strengths and flaws.  When the Hero is a jerk through the whole book, but then you learn why he is that way in the last ten pages, I sometimes walk away scratching my head as to how the Heroine could have been in love with him before knowing all of that.

The story itself moved really well.  I can’t stand a book that spends a page describing a couch in the first chapter, but then the climax of the story is over in less than a paragraph.  A great mix here, I could close my eyes and picture the backgrounds and the characters quirky tics, but the pace stayed smooth enough that I didn’t forget what the characters were in the middle of doing from one page to the next.  Speaking of being in the middle, the sex scenes were smokin’ hot, but didn’t overpower the plot.  Personally, I could’ve used a bit more of the smut, but you can’t really blame me, Jinx and Toombs, and even Rax, were super sexy together.  Yummmmm.

Looking forward to Rax’s book, Nocturnes, and I hope it comes out soon, it’s definitely one that will go to the top of my reading list.

Beats was fantastic, I was lost in the unpredictable rhythm of Jinx and Toombs. It’s flawlessly written, packed with angst, emotion, and crazy turns. I’m pissed there wasn’t more! The twist this book takes are things I NEVER expected, not with Jinx being the heroine. Their story is very different from the characters in the first book, stilled filled with orgasmic sex, but far more deep and emotional.

Jinx is definitely the chameleon she claims to be. But her multiple different hues become distinct as her character discovers herself. Poor girl catholic school girl fell in love with a man committed to another; a commitment she doesn’t understand, but she finds herself in the process of mastering his devotion. A devotion Toombs isn’t prepared for. Their rollercoaster of fucked up takes you so high you think your going to explode before you reach the drop off. But the end result is well worth the frustrating anxiety you feel along alongside them.

All-in-all, Beats is gooood, damn good. I love how different Jinx is from Letty; Beats is from Strings. Ill admit I was little nervous Jinx wouldn’t compare to my love for Letty. But in all actuality, I think I love Jinx more. And Beats did nothing to solve my hunger for Rax’s story. I cannot wait to get inside his head in Nocturnes. I want to understand him. I want whatever is broken in him to be fixed, not just for him, but for Jinx and Toombs too. Until he is fixed, Toombs will still feel slightly broken to me. So basically, I’m waiting impatiently to read more about the craziness of Killer Buzz Float’s rise to fame, but I know it will be well worth it.

Stay Raw.

  1. Great reviews! I finished Beats LATE last night (which explains this 3rd cup of coffee) & I cried. A lot. Didn’t expect tears after all the laughs I had while reading Strings, but it was a strangely pleasant surprise. I love both Strings & Beats so much, but in different, completely awesome ways. I identified with Jinx way more than I thought I would, especially since I loved Letty so much. I still love her, but now I know that Jinx is my girl.

“Until he is fixed, Toombs will still feel slightly broken to me.” EXACTLY! I hated Rax pretty consistently throughout both Strings & Beats, but occasionally he’d do or say things that made me realize something inside him is broken & empty. Can’t wait to find out what it is & who fixes it.
