Jen Taylor has loved Stefan Sellers all her life. When he surprised her with an engagement ring, she thought all her dreams were coming true. But when she discovers Stefan has an agenda that she never even suspected, she breaks off the engagement and goes to pastry school in Paris. Now she’s back in New Orleans, and she has no intention of marrying him for all the wrong reasons. She just has to convince him that marriage is a bad idea. If only she wasn’t having so much trouble convincing herself.
Stefan Sellers has waited years to make Jen his wife so when she wanted to go to pastry school, he decided a few more months wouldn’t matter. But six months later, the girl he picks up from the airport shows very little resemblance to the quiet, sweet girl he let fly away from him. The girl that came back from Paris is wearing five inch stilettos and waving an attitude that is laying waste to everything Stefan ever thought he knew about Jen. His calm, methodical approach to life is suddenly under siege and he can’t seem to keep his hands off her.
Sweetened with a Kiss is a slightly steamy somewhat angsty contemporary romance set in New Orleans. There are no vampires but there are a lot of secrets and pastry. Intended for mature audiences. (There’s some language. What can I say? They’re guys.)
Rating- 3 1/2 out of 5
I was provided with a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. And honestly, this book was exactly what I needed to read. This book was the perfect mixture of sweet, angsty, and a little steamy. Ms. Callahan is another author with the lady ball’s to self-publish and put herself out there. She should be proud. According to Goodreads, this is the first in a series titled, Self-Made Men… Southern Style, and I will definitely be looking for the next one or anything else that Lexxi Callahan puts out there.
I gave Sweetened with a Kiss a 3 ½ out of 5, not because it didn’t hold my attention because it did and not because it is a bad story, which it most certainly is not. Some of the characters could have had better introductions and background information just to give readers a better since of where their loyalties lie and their motivation. There were a few typos and some places where the wording was confusing and I found myself having to re-read a sentence or two in order to figure out what was the intended wording. But I did receive a review copy, so don’t let that sway you away from this book.
The Hero and heroine were good characters and they had great chemistry even when they both had other plans (wink). I was a little confused about Jen and Stefans’ previous interactions before the book took place since they grew up together, but all was answered in good time. This book is sweet and the story was not a rehashed storyline that we have seen over and over again. The steam was mild, but very well written within the context of this story and it had the HEA (Happily Ever After) that I need in my love stories. I loved Stefan’s sister, Lizzie. She was a fun character with some great dialogue. She lightened the mood in the book at just the right time. I hope we see more of these characters in future installments of this series. Maybe a HEA for Lizzie?
